Movie Reviews of Tripping the Rift: The Movie

Movie Review: Animated comedy
Summary: 4 Stars

'Tripping the Rift' is 'Adult', comic relief from reality with some delightful new voices who were clearly having great fun with their animated characters. The story spoofs on many familiar movies and stereotypes. It took some getting used to when the film went from color to black and white in different scenes, but my eyes adjusted. I found other interesting movies in the previews that I plan to check out, such as 'Hatchet' and the horror movie 'Wrestle Maniac'. Please note that while this movie is an 'Animation', the humor is for adults only.

Movie Review: funny and well done
Summary: 3 Stars

I have never seen the TV series, but the ads for it intrigued me. I think I would have appreciated this movie more if I had seen the series and was more involved with the characters and their development.

In addition to the movie, there is a short "making of" featurette, and I enjoyed that as much as I did the movie (but then, I like the behind the scenes stuff). I would have liked even more of that. The animation is pretty good, as are the production values.

It is truly funny. Not all of the humor is to my liking, but there are some great lines and situations. The subtle and not-so-subtle satire and parody is the best part, and I wish there was more of that in the blend. It is very irreverent, extremely nasty, gross at times, and mostly very silly. Think more Cheech and Chong than Firesign Theater.

It is definitely NOT for kids, unless we are talking the ten year-old in a 25 year-old body (and I know a few who would love this). It is fast paced and not very deep, but then it is a comedy. Sort of sexy, gross, drive-by comedy.

It has been likened to South Park, but I haven't ever watched that, so I can't comment on that comparison. One of the actors in the featurette describes it as Star Wars meets the porn industry. I would add in a healthy dose of The Three Stooges (now THAT dates me).

It is not something I will watch over and over again, like Firefly, but I am definitely interested in seeing the TV series now. If you like this kind of humor, it is definitely worth a look.

Movie Review: Parodying the Profane
Summary: 3 Stars

"Tripping the Rift"

Parodying the Profane

Amos Lassen

"Tripping the Rift", a popular animated series on the SciFi channel and now a movie of the same name has been released. What it is seems to be the third season of the show in an animated and unrated version. It is a kind of like bringing the classic comedy film and merging it with horror flicks. Based upon the original ads for the cable show, the film has not lost the originality and style of the original.
The film itself is episodic with each scene used to parody an earlier film or film genre. It begins with a black and white segment which parodies the old Frankenstein movies and then moves on. It is computer generated animation with adult themes, profanity and sexual innuendo and it is certainly not for kids. The characters are very funny but it is best to be familiar with characters from science fiction in order to truly catch the humor.
Jupiter 42 is led by Captain Chode McBlob, a spaceman who thinks of little except eating, quick cash and porn. His pilot is T'Nuk and there is Whip, a very smart lizard-like creature and a robot named Gus who plays the "straight man" for the gay jokes. Lastly, we have Six, a very tall and very sexy Android. They all fly around the galaxy staying one step ahead of the authorities.
The jokes, in many cases, are self-referential and the caricatures are wonderful. It's a fun film but I think you really have to be in the mood for it. It is certainly not for everyone.

Movie Review: Funny, but Shallow
Summary: 4 Stars

The humor in the movie is not any more sleazy than the TV series, but they do use all 7 of George Carlin dirty words. A LOT. Almost too much, to where they lose meaning and impact. The plot is mainly just satire of other movies, rather than making social commentary like the series often did. I enjoyed the movie and glad I bought a copy, but it does not have the depth of the series. And I think it would have actually been funnier if they bleeped out at least a few of the profanities, leave something to the imagination.

Movie Review: Tripping again...uncensored
Summary: 3 Stars

Tripping the Rift, the CGI science fiction spoof, which began as a couple of internet shorts before airing on Canadian TV, then Sci Fi Channel, returns as an unrated DVD release with no holds barred. As raunchy and filled with gratuitous nudity as you'd expect, Tripping the Rift the Movie is 75 minutes of science fiction spoofs and gags consistent with the TV version.

The cast returns for this original made for DVD release. Stephen Root, best known for Newsradio, again voices the morally bankrupt, over-sexed captain Chode of the Jupiter 42 ( nod to "Lost in Space" and "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.") The archetypical prissy gold robot parody of C-3PO, Gus, again played by the great Maurice LaMarche (Futurama).
The A.I. spaceship Bob, a parody of Hal from "2001" is Stuttering John Melendez. Also returning are Whip (Rick Jones) Chode's horny lizard nephew and T'nuk (Gayle Garfinkle) the nasty quadrupedal pilot. Let's not forget the android sex slave, played since the series creation by notable voices like: Patricia Beckmann and Terry Farrell (in both versions of the pilot) Gina Gershon, and Carmen Electra. The most recent voice of "Six of Nine" from season 3, Jenny McCarty.

The story begins as the crew a planet in order protect a princess in a suspiciously Slavic setting down to the black in white genre touches. While the Young Frankenstein / Weekend at Bernies/ Moon over Parador spoof continues Chode is being stalked, in color, by a bulletproof cyborg clown on steroids. The homage to the Terminator continues as the parodies move onto the crew's relocation to the suburbs and Desperate Housewives. Darph Bobo, the supreme Dark Clown who wants to take over the universe, returns to evenge himself on Chode for taking advantage of his daughter Babette.

Overall this DVD effort is as good as it's TV incarnation, it isn't so over-the-top that I could see it as a theatrical release, but it flow pretty good, although the "I love Slovinia" song is sort of lame. Upshot is that fans of the series will love this, fans of adult cartoons like South Park will be okay with it, but casual sci-fi fans will likely take it or leave it.
