Movie Reviews of Tripping the Rift: The Movie

Movie Review: Reminiscent of early Fritz Lang
Summary: 4 Stars

Just kidding.Much more like Eisenstein.

I remember when Tripping the Rift was just a five-minute snippet on a website. I liked it then - it had originality and style, with a good seasoning of profanity and cynical humour. I didn't pay too much attention when it turned into a TV series - I assumed that the new environment would rob it of any character and originality within a season (as it does for most things).

When I saw that a movie had been produced, I must admit that my expectations were not high. When I watched the DVD, the el-cheapo title sequence didn't inspire confidence either.

However, once the movie started - initially in black and white, no less - it soon became apparent that the production had lost none of its original charm. This is actually an amusing little movie; not great, but a decent way to pass an hour or so, and have a few laughs along the way.

The film is episodic, with each scene parodying some earlier film or genre. The black and white section seems to be influenced by Frankenstein, for example. Tying the scenes together is a back-story involving a relentless android, with an Austrian accent, who is trying to kill the hero. Sound familiar? Of course, since Darth Bobo is involved, it's an android clown....

The self-referential jokes, allusions and caricatures come thick and fast. The film is greatly enhanced if you have a working knowledge of the cinema, or at least the more popular side of it. It's worth playing a couple of times, just to find the references you missed first time around.

Not a cartoon for the kids, though - not so much because of the occasional profanity, but mostly because they won't get many of the jokes.

Great entertainment.

Movie Review: Rip-Off!! Not a movie at all, but episodes from the series edited together...
Summary: 2 Stars

Like the title says, this is just a few episodes from the third season edited together to make a 78 minute movie. The episodes cannibalized were Skankenstein, Chode Eraser, Witness Protection and Raiders of the Lost Crock of */@?#!".

Just like when the Ewoks and Droids Movie DVDs were released a few years ago, production companies just edit episodes together and try to pass them off as something new. Just another way to squeeze us for more money!

Movie Review: always know when to get up from the table
Summary: 1 Stars

Got a small film off the NET. It was great. Bought the entire series. It was good. Bought the movie. It blows. One star rating because six of one- half dozen of the other is very fine.

Movie Review: Kind of funny: boso the robot after the three eyed horney toad
Summary: 3 Stars

Boso, the robot, is in terminator mode and is unstoppable.
Chode, the purple horney toad, is the target.
It is "Pigs in Space" as a cartoon that visits
the bride of Frankenstein, the desperate housewives of suburbia
and a gay bar. Sometimes the dialog thinks it is too funny
and laughs at the punchlines for you. In a way it makes me
homesick for Bugs Bunny... or Road Runner.
Some Eric Frank Russel stories that had much more imagination than this. For some reason they think cows, three boobs and three eyes
make for real humor?
The one eyed wino in the alley may be the funny part.

Movie Review: Disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

I like "Tripping the Rift", but found this movie very disappointing. Unlike a lot of the series, the plot is wafer thin. Somewhat like "Epic Movie" or one of those. There was also a lot of Gus and not enough Six. But that's just me.

Overall, the makers seem to have missed an opportunity to really push the envelope on the series, rather then just cobble a movie together based on bits of other movies.

Like I said, disappointing.
