Movie Reviews of TrickMovie Review: Sweet, funny feel-good gay romantic comedy Summary: 5 Stars
Other have correctly sung the praises of this delightful comedy that is both well-directed and well-written and has two adorable leads (Christian Campbell as Gabe and J.P. Pitoc as Mark). So, I'll focus on the absolutely powerhouse supporting actors. Clinton Leupp (aka Coco Peru) is sensational and literally steals the film with her two appearances (first lip syncing to a danced-up I AM WOMAN remix and then delivering a 7-minute monologue with only one cut in the scene--its a virtuoso comedic riff, perfectly delivered and ending with one of the film's best lines: "It burns!"). Leupp later got a larger role (again as Coco) in the funniest movie of 2003--GIRLS WILL BE GIRLS). Tori Spelling is also a revelation as Gabe's neurotic galpal; she's wonderful in a hilariously bad musical number early on and she tops that with her diner meltdown later in the film.
Steve Hayes is amazingly funny as Perry, Gabe's caberet-loving friend who's just broken up with his boyfriend. His motormouth monologue on the street with Gabe and Mark is an example of perfect comic timing. Lorri Bagley proves herself an adept mimic of Marilyn Monroe as Judy, Gabe's roommate's girlfriend who's smarter than we first think. Even the smaller roles are well-cast. Look for Will Keenan (OPERATION MIDNIGHT CLIMAX and TROMEO & JULIET) who exudes charm and smouldering sexiness as the first guy Gabe talks to at the bar (the one who suggests a threeway). This is one movie that delights with every viewing.
Movie Review: IT'S ABOUT TIME! Summary: 5 Stars
When Trick was released, it was during a time when the gay genre was emerging. In fact, in the late 90's it suddenly became chic to be gay. A play, movie, art exhibit could almost guarantee an audience just by having a gay theme. Sadly, most of the films were either formulaic, poorly acted, exploitation of stereotypes, or were really soft-core porn disguised as art-house indies, yet we as a community flocked to participate because finally there were messages for "us" regardless of how banal they were. Trick, however, was different. Trick was so different and so refreshing, I actually went to my local movie theater and saw it no less than five times! I now own the movie and watch it at least once a month. I'm not going to bother to go into the synopsis of the movie, as others have already done so. What I will say is that it is a sweet and funny romantic comedy, with star caliber performances (even from Tori Spelling...I know!). Yes, one may watch this and say...a middle aged queen belting out tunes at a piano bar is a stereotype, and they would be right, however between the script, the actors and the director, the audience sees something more than just stereotypes. The audience sees fully dimensional, well developed characters. The story is well crafted and the dialogue is sharp, funny, and most satisfying of all, real. And for anyone who hasn't run into a drag queen in the men's room...your life is not complete!
Movie Review: The "Trick" is on the viewer! Summary: 5 Stars
What a wonderful, soul lifting film!Unless one is totally homophobic... no. STRIKE THAT! .. Unless one is totally unappreciative of the meaning of LOVE, there is absolutley no reason why one shold not consider adding this title to a collection. I will not elaborate on the cast, so many accoloades have been given to them by the many reviewers of this film, who, save for a very few, applaud this production! This is a "Feel Good" film. What it offers is a chance to view a film about relationships that are truly real. (On multiple levels!) Please see additional reviews offered here.. but, I just want to make a comment.. After all of this film is said and done (forgive me... I am a professional musician).. the MAIN theme of this entire movie is spelled out so correctly in the end credit's music. You see... the word "Trick" means so much more! In fact, the end song sums it up exactly: "A TRICK OF FATE". (Even if you have seen and loved this film.. I strongly encourage you to listen to the lyrics and the music of the end titles!) Without a doubt.. this film is unique... it explores the depth of the human heart, the subtlety of human relationships, the meaning of friendship, and, best of all.. HOPE. CLearly... recommended viewing... especially to anyone with an open heart. Respectfully submitted. Bob Brillian
Movie Review: It Get's Better Every Time Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, I went to see this movie simply because it was a "gay" movie. However, it turned out to be much better than I thought it would. I had read reviews in magazines, all of them at least liked it if not loved it. Still, I was a bit leery of a movie with Tori Spelling in it. Boy did she suprise me. I honestly couldn't think of anything wrong with the movie. I thought it was incredibly sexy (the scene with Mark standing behind Gabriel at the piano) romantic (pretty much the whole movie) funny (too many parts to list, but especially Tori's blow up at the end) I thought it was well acted, well written, and felt "real" to me. It didn't hurt that the leads were both good looking. However, this movie should not be considered just a gay movie. It is simply a romantic comedy, and as they go, this was one of the best I've seen - and I'm a major critic when it comes to movies, so it's really hard for me to find one that I would give a perfect score to. I guess if it was out of 10, I might be able to find a reason to take away half a point, but I doubt it. So, if you want a great date movie - honest - then get this one. I promise that by the end both of you will be feeling better than you did at the beginning. So who knows? Maybe what Gabriel and Mark ended up having at the end could happen to you.
Movie Review: Great cast, great script, sweet denoument Summary: 5 Stars
I was taken in completely by this terrific movie. Even the inevitable ending was handled gracefully and without apology. Christian Campbell plays a young man (Gabe) whose heart is set on writing musicals, and although what bits and pieces we are given are hold-your-nose dreadful, it really doesn't matter because what we are given is only a beginning. It turns out that this movie's purpose will be to tell the story of his turning the corner toward becoming a whole person. The pivotal event is his adventures trying to hook up with a go-go-boy (played wonderfully by the very sexy and very talented John Paul Pitoc)in the face of one failure after another in finding a place to do the deed. What really stands out in this picture is the terrific cast and screenplay. Especially juicy are the "grand-scene-and-aria" set pieces of Clinton Leupp, who plays a spiteful drag queen, and Tori Spelling, Gabe's Queen of De'nial best ... friend. The remaining performances are also winning, the main pair each breathing life into characters that might have been cartoons in less talented hands. My recommendation is to buy this movie because you'll want to see it more than once. Unfortunately the DVD is short on extras - no doubt because films about gay men have short budgets at every stage of their distributions. Still, you probably won't be disappointed.
