Movie Reviews of Tremors

Movie Review: A True Underground Film If I Ever Saw One
Summary: 5 Stars

Tremors is everything a monster movie should be. It's an ode to 50s monster movies without shoving the "ode" part down your throat and constantly wink, wink, winking at you the way Rob Zombie and Quentin Tarantino have done. Homage or not, it's a very good movie in it's own right. In fact it's better than a movie like this should be. Most everyone is familiar with the plot involving underground wormlike creatures terrorizing a small town in the Nevada desert. Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward are two handymen who stumble onto the monsters and then team up with the remaining townspeople to take a stand(only after the plan to flee fails). Along for the ride are Michael Gross as the gun toting Burt(who would later become the central character of the movie and tv series'), and his equally weapon crazy wife played by Reba McEntire. Be on the lookout for Big Trouble In Little China's Victor Wong as an unfortunate general store owner and David Lynch regular, Charlotte Stewart.
Everything about this movie is above average. The acting is all around good, the comedy is dead on and kept in check without going overboard, the creature FX look very good(though some folks from the CGI generation may say they look silly, but what do they know?), the story is engaging and it's never boring. This is a PG-13 rated horror film that sacrifices nothing for the sake of getting that rating. It isn't meant to be a blood bath or sex romp anyway. In fact, the amount of profanity and gore is more than you'd expect, but PG-13 actually meant something in 1990. Practically all onscreen bloodletting is of the monster type anyway, not human, which is easier to get away with.
Most likely you've seen this before, but it certainly doesn't hurt to give a good thing another whirl(just ask my wife). Probably one of the best horror flicks of the 90s and more fun than practically any horror film made in the last ten years.

Movie Review: Tremors: Val & Earl should get Oscars!
Summary: 5 Stars

I know Val & Earl, the lead chracters in "Tremors". I played country music professionaly for 10 years and Val & Earl were at every show. I've ridden in their truck, I've shot their guns, I've watched them fight and make up and I'm proud to call them friends. As you can guess I don't really know Val & Earl but the characters brought to life by Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon are a tribute to the grasp of reality the scriptwriters have and the superb ability of these two actors. My brother and I have watched "Tremors" many times and each time can't get past the dead-on portrayal of these two guys. Mannerisms, body language, speech patterns, We watch it all and every time lose sight of the fact that Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon are playing roles. "Tremors" presents a vehicle of such reality in all the character portayals that the believability of the rest of the story line becomes a non-issue. It's as if these were your friends telling you a fantastic story about what happened to them. The superb writing and natural presentaions by all the players as well as the remote setting lend themselves the suspension of disbelief that is so necessary to any fantastic story. Also the fact that not every question is answered makes it seem much more life-like. Great applause is deserved by all involved for presenting a tale of terror that doesn't rely on gore as its core, a story with great humor that doesn't need to turn "blue" to reach you, and a fable of misadventure in modern life that doesn't leave you depressed and hopeless. Watch it... It's great fun! PS. When you see Val & Earl tell 'em Bob wants his Hank Jr. tape back.

Movie Review: This valley is just one long smorgasbord!
Summary: 5 Stars

With this review getting me past the halfway point in my "31 horror movie reviews for the 31 days of October" concept I had, leading up to the 31st by Halloween, I figure I should add my input on yet another classic, namely "Tremors." "Tremors" is one of those movies with a universal appeal, whether or not you're a hardcore fan of horror movies. It's got a strong plot, consistent series of events, awesome action and intensity, and characters that are very likable and the kind you want to see survive. Although it's not as graphic as other movies of the genre, highlighted by the PG-13 rating, there are some good monster-related gore scenes, like when a construction worker jackhammers a monster through the ground and blood bubbles up. There's also a lot of good laughs throughout the movie, including some brilliant one-liners that make for some down-to-earth comedy. Even more, we have a budding romance in the sub-plot that makes for a happy ending at the end. The monsters, although are kept underground in the earlier half of the movie, are amazing when shown. And of course, great monsters make a great monster movie.

The sound and picture quality of the disc is really nice, too. What's more, there's lots of extra features here that beef up the quality of the disc. I actually got this in the "Tremors 4-Pack", which has all four movies in the series, and at a great price too. Overall, I can't think of a single bad thing about this movie, or the disc it comes on. For those seeking a highly-entertaining, down-to-earth monster movie, "Tremors" will sound off a 10 on the Richter Scale! Thanks for the time, and peace.

Movie Review: Hey it's our old pal Stumpy!
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember seeing this movie as a kid after watching "Beetlejuice" and the infamous sandworms of Saturn. So when seeing this film with giant carnivorous worms, I was instantly hooked. Years later this films still manages to pack a punch and still hold my attention longer than most films today.

Fred Ward and Kevin Bacon are unlikely pair to be in such a oddball buddy film turned Scifi horror straight out the Atomic Age. Micheal Gross and the fiery, redheaded Reba McEntire (who by the way looks good carrying a machine gun, wow where can I find a woman like that?:)) play a believable married couple. With Reba's levelheadedness and Gross' paranoid but not over the top gun fanatic-turned-survivalist is an interesting combination (which strangely reminds me of my brother who seems to emulate Burt down to the wall of guns).

Even his motto has become my brother's favorite saying, " If you need it and don't got it, you sing a different tune,".

Anyway, this film manages to be scary and funny at the same time, a feat not easily accomplished in today's hack'em-up-while-their-screamin' horror flicks. Also, it's somewhat kid friendly as there aren't buckets of red corn syrup pouring off every inch of celluloid. The director seems to have studied Hitchcock's Less-is-more method when it comes to death scenes, though a few gory bits are bound to pop up.

It's a very fun film from beginning to end and is well thought out, and is worth a watch. Also it's a great popcorn movie for a rainy day. Definitely worth owning.

Movie Review: Corpses and Earthquakes and Giant Man-Eating Worms, Oh My! (4.5 stars)
Summary: 5 Stars

They sure don't make 'em like this anymore, do they? "Tremors," starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, finds two friends on their way out of town suddenly grounded when corpses start popping up and gigantic monsters which somewhat resemble earthworms start springing from the Earth. It's a fight for survival as the townspeople must find higher ground and avoid becoming soulfood for the bizarre creatures.

"Tremors" is essentially a homage to the monster movies of the 1950s, and it works, firing on all cylinders and never failing to entertain. The creatures are gruesome and strange, while the characters are often wacky and eccentric. Obviously the film is carried by solid performances from Bacon and Ward, but at the core, the creatures are the stars and truth be told, nothing quite like them has appeared in a movie like "Tremors." Most importantly, though, the film moves at such a brisk pace that it never sags or loses momentum, giving it unlimited replay value.

The film inspired a string of direct-to-DVD sequels that failed to capture the thrill of the original. Even still, its reputation is still that of an enjoyable and energetic monster-mash with a host of fun performances. A film that never gets old, and in many ways, is vastly under-rated, "Tremors" is a roller-coaster ride you'll want to take again and again.

On a side note, the DVD is absolutely terrible in regards to its picture quality. Sure, the film is always worth watching, but this release makes it rather painful. Collector's Edition my butt!
