Movie Review: Not Everyone Trembles

No doubt the reader will be surprised that this reviewer deems this film to be fatally flawed: a crowd-pleaser and tear-jerker. Yes, it does great good, in bringing to the public eye the difficulties of its subjects. However, in order to create a dramatic tension, and thus please the crowds (especially a certain kind of straight, liberal crowd which feels good about feeling bad about the sad plight of these gay men and women), it sacrifices portraying the far more complex situation in which orthodox people find themselves. The conflict is not as inevitable as this film might lead the audience to suspect, and neither is there necessarily a conflict between religion and the homosexual orientation. The film-maker, and editor, have clearly chosen to ignore the far more nuanced orthodox responses to homosexuals, as well as to insufficiently show how much of the painful negative responses are socially generated rather than religiously inspired. Thus a certain fetishized image of orthodox judaism is projected. And, correspondingly, the orthodox homosexual is presented in caricature as a perenially conflicted tormented person, horribly poised between the choices of religion or love. To really address the complex social, religious, gendered situation of homosexuals in orthodox judaism, a more patient, less sensationalist documentary will need to be made.
