Movie Reviews of Treasure Island

Movie Review: Classic Motion Picture Masterpiece In Glorious Black and White!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a by far the best version of Treasure Island on film. The acting, story and direction are superlative! This was a period of time when MGM and the other motion picture giants were trying to get used to the Hayes Code and get the censors off their backs. The censors were leading a call to boycott movies due to their lack of morality. MGM set about calming the situation down by making a series of expensive, wonderful films from the classics. The Hayes Code couldn't complain about that and how could they lead a boycott of the Classics? It worked, not only by calming the situation down, but by providing people with some of the greatest films of all time. Treasure Island is a wonderful film. It has adventure, pirates and excitement. John Barrymore gets to act in two bit parts to show off his acting talent and we get to see why Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper were so good together as a team. This is a movie that is a good example of why the 1930s was never surpassed as the greatest decade of film in the US and probably the world. The DVD is not colorized thank god and restored beautifully. I remember it as a kid having scratchy sound and a poor print. This is all corrected here. Try it, you'll love it!

Movie Review: This is the classic that measures other versions
Summary: 5 Stars

Basic story is a mysterious sailor who calls himself Captain takes lodging in an obscure location. He is visited by mysterious unsavory stringers and pays the sun of the Inn owner to watch for a mysterious one legged man. The story leads to tests of loyalty with pirates and a treasure island.

Of course nothing can replace the book Treasure Island ISBN: 3895084581. However the Charlton Heston version comes closest. I also have a copy of "Treasure Island" (1934) because that is what I watched as a kid and thought of it as a classic. But Wallace Beery is of a different acting era than Heston; yet he is good in his way for the time. He has a way of looking at you. He is also much better then the Bobby Driscoll version of (1950.) Actually "Muppets Treasure Island" is better then the Bobby Driscoll version.
This film should be a part of you permanent library. It has lots of energy.

Movie Review: One of those movies that should never be re-made
Summary: 5 Stars

Well, finally this is on DVD. Like "Miracle on 34th St.", "Christmas Carol", etc., this movie has one definitive version, and should never have been touched again. Wallace Beery is Long John Silver, for anyone else to play his part should condemn them to the lower reaches where they have to watch Green Acres re-runs for eternity, the very idea makes me physically ill. Jackie Cooper's role here is absolutely brilliant, upon my soul! And the movie itself is really quite well done, very exciting and interesting, well acted in all the parts. But matey, when it comes to parrots perching on shoulders, the digital Wallace Beery will live forever. An essential movie, probably top 100 all time.

Movie Review: A REAL CLASSIC
Summary: 5 Stars

Most of the positives about this superb film have been well written already. I would like to focus on what I found to be the surprise performance of the film, Lewis Stone. I always found him to be a likable functional actor lacking the extra spark of the great character actors of his day, though, as Judge Hardy, he had no peer. In "Treasure Island" he has a very commanding presence that leaves the viewer with no doubt that he is a Captain of the Royal Navy. He adds much to the scenes during the seige of the stockade, giving his character just enough hard edge without suggesting that he is a martinet. Also, was there ever a scurvier collection of pirates? Don't miss this one.

Movie Review: The real pirate movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the real pirate movie! Ever since I saw this film the first time a long time ago, this is what I think of when you talk about buccaneers. Here you can hear the whole piratesong: 15 men on a dead mans chest....And learn about the black spot. Things that has been an inspiration to the pirates of the carribeans films. Wallace Berry and Jackie Cooper does a great acting job. Long John Silver is the crookiest crook, but still charming in a ruff way and young Jim Hawkins can't help liking him. This film is from 1934, so the film is in black and white. A great movie, says I, says you, says.....
