Movie Reviews of Transatlantic: Live in Europe

Movie Review: Skip your next live concert and buy this instead
Summary: 5 Stars

The three Transatlantic fans in our household (ranging in age from nine to forty-nine) gathered last night to watch Live In Europe, and we were all just floored by it. The sound quality (as played through very high-end audio equipment) was excellent, and the general technical quality of the disk is fine, but the performances are just outstanding.

Neal Morse looks like he's enjoying performing more than anyone I've ever seen on stage. His vocals were better live than I thought they would be. All of the band chips in vocals, but Neal and Roine Stolt are the ones that you'll love listening to.

Watching Mike Portnoy do drums is a real treat. That boy must be in great physical condition to bang his way through those half-hour epics, with high energy and sharp drumming all the way.

Pete Trewavas serves up fine bass, with a couple of opportunities to shine, reminding me of Chris Squire's extra gigs in Yes concerts. Roine Stolt is, of course, one of the better guitar players in rock, and shows it. I was a bit surprised to see a relatively low-key performance from him. I suppose in a normal concert it would not have been noticeable, but compared to the high energy of the other members, it was.

I'd never heard of Daniel Gildenlöw of Pain of Salvation, who was added to provide some depth in guitar and keyboards, but he's quite good and also enjoys being there.

Most of the music from their two albums is here, but I was most impressed by Stranger in Your Soul. I also found the live rendition of We All Need Some Light to be powerful. And they take advantage of the fact that Suite Charlotte Pike is a fairly disconnected song to insert a bunch of classic Beatles at the transition points. You might think that would be really strange, but somehow it works well, and really showed the guys as well-rounded musicians. I was particularly surprised at how well Neal did vocals that were originally from Paul McCartney.

We also had two guests at the house for part of the concert. They sat in for three songs (which meant over an hour) and were very intrigued. They asked things like "Why haven't we ever heard of these guys?" I echo another reviewer - a major label needs to get these fellows producing more music. And that way, we'd also get to see them in concert again.

All in all, the experience was comparable to going to see a real live show, and it's a lot less hit-or-miss. If you like prog rock, you're almost sure to love it.
