Movie Reviews of Training Day (Snapcase Packaging)

Movie Review: Denzel & Ethan...What a pair!
Summary: 5 Stars

It's the day before the Oscars, and I very much needed to rent this film, being a Denzel fan from way back, and I saw A BEAUTIFUL MIND and thought Crowe was swell. It's good to see Denzel playing a baddasss, because, with the exception of "Courage Under Fire", he'd always been maybe just a bit too perfect. This shows range & depth; truly a committed performance. The real star, though, is Ethan Hawke, who never really impressed me before. Putting him up against Denzel's brilliant performance is a true test of acting greatness. I'm sure this type of thing goes on in Police Dept's somewhere, and it's unnerving to think it does; I'm sure production would've been prevented if it hit too many true notes. The film is exciting, suspenseful, and the acting throughout is excellent. The DVD has a crisp 2.35:1 Widescreen, and characters portrayed by Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg are quite fine, proving other areas of talent. I'm impressed with this film, and I think Denzel should win the Oscar, as well as Hawke (though he won't, cuz he's the dark-horse...I hope I'm wrong...) Definitely see this film; it's unsettling and definitely a morality tale (where do you stop bending rules?) I was greatly entertained, and if you're a Denzel or Hawke fan, definitely SEE THIS FILM!! They are riveting!! DVD extras are plentiful.

Movie Review: The "Wolf" of Action Films...
Summary: 5 Stars

...is what you can call Training Day, the distrubing police epic starring Denzel Washington in an Oscar-winning performance.
Denzel stars as Alonzo, a very corrupt cop playing both sides of the law. He doesn't resort to evidence, or jurys, or interrogations. He just packs brutal violence into his brand of law-making.
Training day is about a young cop's training day, a day that will test if he is good enough material that can become an infamous narcotic officer. His mentor, and mental abuser, is Alonzo. During the day Alonzo sets Jake(Ethan Hawke)up, holds a gun to his head and forces him to use narcotics that destroy his mind, and he makes him assist in murder and robbery. Alonzo teses him, plays with his mind, and puts jake way over his boiling point.
In the end, Alonzo ditches Jake with a gang of Mexican hitmen, leaves him for dead, and goes back to his wife(Eva Mendes) and their son.
Jake finds Alonzo, chases him to a rooftop, and they battle for control over Alonzo's ground. It is a climatic battle of "mentor" and "student".
Training Day is brutal and disturbing to watch and digest. It will certainly make you think about the NARC squad, and will leave you feeling different than when you came in.

Movie Review: Director Fuqua's Masterpiece; Denzel's Oscar deserving performance; Eva's beauty too!
Summary: 5 Stars

Even two years after purchasing this DVD, I play it to test recently released video equipment. And "it's a trip" to revisit the dark side of the City of Angels as is captured here.

The care that Director Antoine Fuqua took in selecting the Los Angeles backdrops to his film "Training Day" is obvious from the success of the film. He's created a color saturated portrait of Los Angeles and it's narcotics underworld. And his film is perfectly shot.

If you want to show off your big screen, this outstanding video transfer to DVD ranks five stars (*****). Our friends tell us it's actually better than going to the movies.

Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke are perfect as Narc Training Officer and rookie. Washington's character takes control from the very first moments of the film. There's even a bit of Eve Mendes' beauty which somehow shines through an otherwise bleak existence and marginal relationship with Washington's character.

Visually a five star film; and except for an oddly fitting finish, a piercingly convincing look into the narcotics underworld of Los Angeles. This film ought to be on the top ten list for testing the quality of your DVD player and your Big Screen.

Movie Review: Denzel the Unsaint, breath of fresh air + oscar worthy
Summary: 5 Stars

I am so glad Washington won the Best Actor Oscar ...for an unsaintly role. ...Washington inhabits this movie from the moment he appears onscreen and I'm glad to report that as a villain he is not over the top....Not here. Washington fully fleshes out this LAPD narcotics star policeman and how he's gotten to the top of his field by becoming one with the enemy. In fact, you can even see the tidbits left over in his personality from the man he used to be. Washington gives us little flashes of that man, showing us they are just about totally gone but not quite. Ethan Hawke always holds his own in a movie and this one is no exception. His is a less showy role since he is the good guy cop but he nicely develops his character's moral dilemma throughout. He is a squeaky clean young cop who is dedicated to eradicating crime the "right" way but his idealism looks fair to crushing him in modern day LA and with the LAPD. A very well written script, a stylish director who knew what he wanted to accomplish, actual LA gang members in the cast and some good performances from music industry members round out the film nicely. I am not a fan of "cop" movies but this movie does not fit easily into any broad ...[category], thankfully.

Movie Review: the coincidence
Summary: 5 Stars

The "coincidence" scene late in the film, which turned off a number of viewers (something which the director comments on in his commentary) happens to be my favorite scene in the whole film. The point of the film seems to be that the "thugs" an earlier poster decried have more of a sense of honor than the corrupt police, and it rewards the "good" cop played by Hawke, who, dimwit that he is, put himself into harms way to help someone even tho he didnt have to. Fuqua is trying to show that
the people who live close to the street are not amoral savages
but people with good in them who do recognize good in others. It doesnt make anarchic syndicalism any less hellish of a social system to my "law and order" sensibilities but I accept his point, and IMHO the actors pull it off. The scene I cant stand is the one where Denzel is shooting his gun sideways, like hes Chow Yun Fat. Its supposed to show how bad*** his character is but to me its the most unforgivably unrealistic moment in the show (I also have my doubts about Ethan walking off with all that money but hey he did have a gun). As far as Denzels performance... fantastic! From line delivery to facial expressions and ticks he is flawless.
