Movie Reviews of Training Day (Snapcase Packaging)Movie Review: Training Day Summary: 5 Stars
You HAVE to see this movie! It's one of the best movies of the year. This is actually one of the only movies that I can tolerate Denzel Washington in (the other being The Hurricane). I was surprised at how great this film is considering all of the so-so to bad reviews that I read about it. This film is a refreshing break from all the dramas out there and that were in the Oscar race this year like A Beautiful Mind and In The Bedroom (both of them were excellent but Training Day was a sigh of relief). Denzel's acting as a evil narcotics cop was surpassed me expectations. He delivered his evilness without a glance, as if he were naturally like that, which is every actor's goal. He was entirely believable in every aspect throughout the whole movie. Ethan Hawke was his co-star in the movie (another acting job that surprised people at how good he is and definitely deserved the Oscar nod). Hawke and Washington sort of acted off each other and did it well since their chemistry is great. When Washington accepted his Oscar at the awards show last month, I think everybody realized how many times he really should have been up there. That Oscar went to him for Training Day especially, but also for the awards he didn't win for (just to name a few) The Hurricane, Malcolm X, and others. If you're still not sure if you should see this movie, see it because you will like it and you will be surprised at how much you love and hate Denzel's character at the same time. Plus, you can see some cameos from Macy Gray and Snoop Dogg
Movie Review: Amazing Summary: 5 Stars
This movie was hands down amazing. And also, believe it or not, the story line was very believable. Although Denzel Washingtons character was doing things which, as a cop, seem unbelievable, and things the LAPD would never let slide, events much like this did occur. David Mack, Rafael Perez, Kevin Gaines.
Kevin Gaines- Was half gang banger, half cop. Had been reported on several occasions as commiting fealonies, never convicted in court. Aimed his gun at an undercover cop, Frank Lyga one day and Lyga shot back, and was convicted of a racist murderer.
Rafael Perez- How much can you say about this man. I think that Perez could have been the man Denzels' character was based upon. If you havent heard about the LAPD's CRASH unit, look it up. They would act as gang bangers to catch gangbangers. The intimidation factor they called it. And perez was no exception. He has been convicted of multiple murders, assaults, and burgulries of drugdealers and gang bangers. Is now out of jail i believe.
David Mack- Helped out and was friends with Perez, part of LAPD, and robbed a bank.
These are just some of the many stories about dirty LAPD officers. If you want to know more, read Labyrinth: A detective inestigates the murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the implications of Death Row Records' Suge Knight, and the origins of the LAPD scandal by Randall Sullivan
Back to the movie, well acted and directed. Great movie, watch it.
Movie Review: An excellent, well thought-out film... Summary: 5 Stars
"Training Day" may very well be the smartest cop drama in recent history. Denzel Washington gives an Academy Award-winning performance as Alonzo, a hard-edged street cop whose specialty is narcotics. Ethan Hawke plays his rookie of the day who is fresh from training and is green in the field. The film, as the title implies, follows our characters for a day and we see Alonzo do some things we're not sure we want cops doing, such as drinking and driving, stealing money, and taking drugs. While the film's ending is highly predictable and even inevitable, it still leaves a strong impact on the audience. Denzel Washington is completely outstanding as the narcotics detective. This really is a hugely different role for him and he handles it effortlessly, putting him among other film tough-guys like DeNiro, Humphrey Bogart, Al Pacino, and Sean Connery. Washington glows on the screen, steals the show from an already-outstanding cast and flexes those acting muscles like he never has before. Some people questioned his getting the Oscar for this movie. I don't. This is the best performance so far in his career. Director Antoine Fuqua also does a splendid job in keeping the film fluid, fast, and furious. There are touches of humor mixed with scenes of violence. Very rarely does a director really flesh out the surroundings and setting the way Fuqua has done here. "Training Day" is one of the best films of 2001 and shouldn't be missed at all.
Movie Review: Denzel in his most surprising and twisted role yet Summary: 5 Stars
Denzel Washington has played many brilliant characters in the past, most notably Malcolm X and The Hurricane, Rubin Carter. Unlike those real life characters, Alonzo Harris has no ties with reality, thank God. This character is a cop who has been in the streets for too long dealing with scum that eventually his mind and morale went crooked. Trust me, we do not want these kind of characters wandering our streets! Denzel nails the part with extreme professionalism which earned him an Academy award for Best Actor.Ethan Hawke, who plays rookie cop Jake Hoyt, is excited and yet very unlucky to be assigned to Harris for a his first day, training day. What Hoyt is about to experience is a day that he will be looking back at not as a day of his training to be a cop, but as a day he chose the moral path he would stick to for the rest of his life. Antoine Fuqua's direction brings the realism of the streets and smoothens the atmosphere for his characters to express themselves freely, especially Washington who seems to steal every scene he's in with the dialogue that he conveys like a pro and its Ethan Hawke who does a wonderful job of staying one step behind Washington making the characters interactions one on one an interesting viewing. The DVD features several bonuses including a behind the scenes segment, an alternate ending and a couple music videos. Recommended A-
Movie Review: Denzel makes the film his own Summary: 5 Stars
I had not heard of Training Day until Denzel Washington won the best actor oscar for his role in the film. This didn't make me want to watch it especially, as actors and actresses who usually win these awards tend to win them for roles in c**p arty films. However a friend lent me the film when it came out on dvd and I was amazed, it is easily one of the best films I had seen in years.
The star of the film is obviously Denzel Washington, who plays the corrupt, almost evil cop brilliantly. Ethan Hawke also deserves a mention as the slightly naive rookie cop who disagrees with his partner's methods but reluctantly agrees to do most things he asks. The film begins strangely with Alonzo (Denzel Washington) telling Jake Hoyt (Hawke) to smoke some weed they had picked up, and he also gives him alcohol after much pesuasion. At first this seems strange but as the plot progresses it becomes evident Alonzo has Hoyt trapped. The plot is superb, though the ending is a little predictable, not wanting to give it away though. I also loved the cameo appearances from Snoop Dogg and Dr Dre, who was surprisingly good in his role.
I won't mention any more of the plot, just to say if you haven't already seen this film, get it now. A superb film and Denzel Washington definetely deserved his oscar and the other accolades that came his way.
