Movie Review: Man it' s like something out of your worst nightmare, I wouldn't know where to start. How about the beginning? Summary: 4 Stars
In 1979 Full Moon was an actual respectable company that put some actual time and logic into the movies they released, much much different from their current state. Being that they were just kicking off their film careers, much like the Sid brothers B careers, there was plenty of focus and great writing. Despite that fact right from the opening credits you know you've stumbled upon some nice grainy looking 70's B with a cast you could probably imagine without and descriptions. It had a nice feel to it. Something that most likely would have been caught late on Saturday night years ago introduced by Joe Bob himself while flipping back to Don West's card auction during commercials.
Tourist Trap goes as so...a group of teenagers consisting of three girls and one guy winds up breaking down far off the beaten path. While the only guy, who looks like a Fonzie stunt double, attempts to fix the car they are met an older fellow by the name of Mr. Slausen. Seems like a nice guy...he's trying to run you out of business and all you can say is hmmm he seems like a nice guy. Well nice guy he's not when he turns out to be some lunatic with mental powers that kills and turns his victims into mannequins. Once mannequins he uses his telepathic powers to somewhat bring them back to life to help him freak everybody out before icing them.
Tourist Trap turned out to be one entertaining and pretty creepy little horror flick. Sure there were moments of corny acting but overall was worth the one time watch without question. There's always something weird about mannequins that makes you feel a little uneasy, and this one exploits that to a new level. While watching Sid pondered what would happen if Santa saw this movie? Even thinks he may have possibly seen it late one night working in between his on and off slumber while someone draws a picture of him. Either way we are pretty sure it would have put him over the edge in the scare department. It just seems like a concept that really would have got him unnerved, don't you think?
Movie Review: Stop in at Slausen's for a Fun Ol' Time Summary: 4 Stars
3.5 Stars.
Aaaah, the Seventies. Horror from this decade had such a particular 'vibe' to it. "Tourist Trap" is no exception. It oozes all the grand fun of a cheesy 1970's shockfest. And what's more, it's not completely bad. After a head-scratcher of an opening in which a poor lad is done in by objects that should be inanimate, we meet our group of happy travelers. The kids need help with their car, and the kindly proprietor of the old wax museum is glad to be of service. What follows is a blend of Psycho, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Carrie, and the original House of Wax.
There''s not much original material here but a few things elevate this above the usual slasher fare. Chuck Connors is enjoyable, with his tongue firmly planted in his cheek. And Pino Donaggio's frenetic score is unsettling and appropriate (he had also scored Carrie, and his music seems like a cousin to Bernard Hermann's score for Psycho).
"Tourist Trap" plays by the rules of horror films: The kids poke their noses where they shouldn't, and pay the price. Nothing is what it seems. Strangers offering assistance can only lead to danger. Endings aren't always happy or tidy.
Maybe this film is cheesy and predictable, but there is something about it that makes it more enjoyable than many other horror features of the same era. Maybe it's the mannequins, or the horrible voice of brother Dave, or Chuck Connors. You either love it or loathe it, I guess.
