Movie Review: A smart and brilliant urban metaphor!
Summary: 5 Stars

The opera prima of Jaco van Dormael finds Thomas, who is really convinced he was exchanged at birth with his neighbor Alfred; subsequently he has to lead an anonymous existence and insignificant life. In order to resolve this stigma, he resorts to a smart and escapist device: to adopt the identity of his own invention, a secret agent named" Toto le heros" The next step is the unexpected Odyssey, he will have to undergo to uncover his true identity.

Mesmerizing, imaginative and refined inspiration , made of this film an immediate cult movie since it was released. The fact of having been awarded in Cannes with The Camera d' or in 1991 talks by itself about its undeniable artistic merits.

The title character is an fictional supersecret agent, idolized by a young boy named Thomas. The lad aspires to become Toto when he grows up; but thanks to a kaleidoscope of flashbacks and flashforwards, we know that he'll end up ordinary and unfulfilled. The film hopscotches between the Three Ages of Thomas: wide-eyed youngster, mediocrity-mired adult, bitter old man. The elder Thomas has never gotten over his childhood traumas and hatreds. He was always jealous of his wealthy boyhood friend Alfred, fantasizing that he and his chum were switched at birth. At the end, the aged Thomas escapes from a senior citizens' home -- an act which leads to Fate dealing its final ironic blow.
