Movie Reviews of Total Recall 2070

Movie Review: Great start for a series!
Summary: 3 Stars

I agree with the guy from Seattle; they should have made it clearer that this was a series pilot! It was great, visually attractive and the plot and characterization was excellent. It just left too many loose ends to make it on its own as a film, though I would *love* to see the rest of the series! It's kind of like watching _Fellowship of the Ring_ and not knowing that there are more movies coming!

Movie Review: Blade Runner meets TV cop show...badly
Summary: 2 Stars

Another failed SF series. And watching it, I can understand why this one failed (even though I still cannot understand why something like JAG can survive for ten years...). First of all, the debt to Blade Runner is considerable. Cops tracking `androids,' exterior scenes garishly lit in constant rain by neon fluted with Japanese characters. And a scene midway into the story of an android wanting to extend his memory and the `cop' not killing him. In this version, he jumps off of the building instead of delivering the pithy 'tears in rain' speech. And the dialog does not approach the genre-pathos of BR.

The structure of the story revolves around a good `cop' who is chronically underappreciated by his captain. The dialog is peppered with cliches from just about every TV cop show ever written. What is tiresome is the trope of the good cop constantly doing good cop work, yet his captain somehow amazingly seems not to be able to stop yelling and berating him for it. In this series, the logic of such a relationship is broken. We can see no reason why our hero Hume keeps getting trash-mouthed by his boss, as he is consistently uncovering clue after clue in the ongoing investigation and breaking it wide open. But of course, that doesn't create much drama, so we have to have his boss be an unmitigated jerk. And the female lead/support is also tiring. Enough of bromide female characters afraid for their spouses and constantly berating them for not coming home on time or forgetting the milk. Let's face it, as a viewer, If I see this guy evade certain death and heroically perform feat after feat, i'm not going to have much sympathy for his dumbass wife. But the berating chastising/wise wife is a hallowed cliche in TV and is trotted out again and again. And boringly, everyone is beautiful - or at least, the good guys are. Skip it.

Movie Review: covered ground.
Summary: 2 Stars

Want Sci-Fi action and adventure? Want a plot about companies messing with your mind? Wamt facsinating scenes of Mars? Well you'll find it all here, and all taken directly from Total Recall, but this movie isn't as good as it's namesake.

Yeah, all five sconds of the scenery on Mars is borrowed directly from Arnolds action packed adventure. What's more, after seeing the mysterious VTOL looking craft (Same as in TOTAL RECALL) go into a bunker, you get to see inside the bunker, where our passenger disembark from what looks like a Mercury landing capsule!

OK, other intersting point, there was no reason whatsoeever for the movie to have set that scene on Mars. It could just as well have happened in Nevada, or Brazil, or even downtown London.

There is one original feature, that is the Androids, which the movie supposedly is all about. Odd, these cyborgs all bleed milk and noodles like the ones in Alien...

Of course, there is the scene of gratuitous nuduty in the beginning, but if that's what you look for in a movie, you probably aren't too interested in Sci-Fi.

Movie Review: Should be recalled
Summary: 2 Stars

I mean, as in 'factory recall.' See that quote on the casing, "Total action?" That comes from the Canadian edition of TV Guide. If any more impressive source could have been cited, I assume the makers would have used that quote instead.

This could be a made-for-TV effort. Instead of acting, this relies on stereotypes, like sneering bad-guy, maverick cop, and don't-make-waves boss of the maverick. Then there's that cop's partner, the one with a secret that you'll pretty much guess in the first few seconds of his appearance. In fact, when it came time to out that guy in a big dramatic scene, I had long since forgotten that his secret was secret at all.

The big bad corporation theme still works, especially after the recent implosion of the financial corporations. That's about it, though. Maybe this was watchable after a few beers, when nothing else was on, but its sell-by date came and the day it was aired. Just don't bother.

Movie Review: Warning! This is a pilot!
Summary: 2 Stars

I am sorry to say that I just wasted 2 hours of my life on this. I really enjoyed it, but all of sudden it just ended! No real ending, no resolution. Nothing. Then I come on here and figure out that this is just a pilot episode to a series. Now I have to figure out if I have access on cable to see the rest of this. I guess I should have been more careful about what I was getting myself into. Overall a good concept, but I would like to how it ends!
