Movie Reviews of Torn Curtain

Movie Review: maybe not hitch's best - but totally underrated
Summary: 4 Stars

If Hitchcock was guilty of one thing it is that he never changed his formula.. Why should he have? Afterall, he was one of the great innovators of cinema - his style was copyed by everyone - was it not enough that the man himself was a complete original? Such criticisms now seem misplaced especially on his later films which deserve more attention and consideration..
Now that Marnie is considered a masterpiece - it is time for a reappraisal of such films as Torn curtain.. I found myself completely satisfied with the espionage thriller.. It had all of the great Hitchcock moments that I would come to expect and love..
I would recommend it - but not without the warning that this is obviously not going to be a film of the caliber of 'vertigo' or 'north by northwest' - once you have cleared your head of that you can truly appreciate a very good movie..
Interestingly paul newman and hitch did not really hit it off.. Newman apparently did not care for the script..

Movie Review: Much better than I had expected -- a very underated film
Summary: 4 Stars

I just watched TORN CURTAIN for the very first time. I had read many reviews which stated the film was one of Alfred Hitchcock's weaker efforts, so I didn't have very high expectations. But I now agree with those who think the film is vastly underated! I enjoyed the film quite a bit, and in fact found that it offered more suspense (as a whole) than quite a few of his other films I have seen. I thought Paul Newman and Julie Andrews were just fine in their roles, contrary to other reviews I have read. And the supporting cast were all very good. The fight with Gromek is a highlight, not just of this particular film but of Hitchcock's entire body of work, in my opinion. The pursuit through the museum and to the farm, the bus ride, the post office visit, the theater house -- all these scenes felt like "classic" Hitchcock to me. Very exciting and suspenseful. Of the 14 films in the Masterpiece Collection box set, I rank TORN CURTAIN solidy among the upper half.

Movie Review: Ordinary story. Great directing.
Summary: 4 Stars

"Torn Curtain" is one of the lesser known of Hitchcock's American films. And while it's not as great as some of his best work, it's still very well made and has that Hitchcock feeling. It's not a fast paced story, and a less capable director might have made a forgettable, somewhat dull, movie, but Hitchcock effectively builds tension between the characters (also helped by good acting) and creates several quite suspenseful scenes. You might say that the direction is better than the story and that some of the parts are better than the film as a whole. Still highly recommended to Hitchcoch fans and also recommended to fans of cold war/espionage thrillers.

On a side note: Some DVDs are pan-and-scanned. Unfortunately mine was. Before buying the film, make sure you get the correct widescreen version.

Movie Review: Cold War Mystery
Summary: 4 Stars

A very good movie. Not quite as spectacular as some of the other Hitchcock movies, e.g. North by Northwest (my personal favorite) or Psycho, but very good. The characters are very well fleshed out and presented. The movie manages to convey very well the claustrophobic atmosphere of the cold war in a country behind the former Iron Curtain. This movie is a must for any Hitchcock admirer.

Movie Review: Not as bad as others say
Summary: 4 Stars

Look, this is not a bad film. Sure, Newman and Andrews were not Hitch's first choices for the roles (I would have loved to see his picks), but there are many great scenes and set pieces in this film. Yes, it's a bit "cold" but it's about the Cold War! Hitch always knew how to put all his thematic ideas on the screen and this one is no exception. Give it a second chance.
