Movie Reviews of Topper/Topper Returns

Movie Review: Jim McCutcheon
Summary: 4 Stars

I saw the Topper movie way back in the late 40's as a kid and was entranced by Constance Bennett. Viewing this film again so many years later I am still struck by her vivacious looks, wit and humour, as portrayed in this film. The story is timeless about a car crash couple that appear as ghosts and figure that a good deed will get them to the Pearly Gates. They latch on to Topper, a hen-pecked banker and straight laced as, and proceed to brighten his existence with extremely comical results.

The next movie with Joan Blondell does not shine to the same extent as Joan is no match for Constance Bennet. It is OK but only scores 2 stars in my book

Movie Review: A ghost of a chance
Summary: 4 Stars

This crystal-clear Artisan translation brings to life the 1937 film about a repressed banker Cosmo Topper (Roland Young) who gets to live out his midlife crisis thanks to two fun-loving socialite ghosts (Cary Grant and Constance Bennett). The pacing is slow, but the film makes up for it in Young's delightfully droll performance as the banker, the quaint retro special effects and the delightfully depraved indifference to death. Billie Burke is hilarious as Topper's wife. The companion sequel, "Topper Returns," is a racist, insipid murder mystery featuring the bug-eyed Joan Blondell and Young.

Movie Review: Two classics, one better than the other
Summary: 4 Stars

The reviewers are right about the amusing nature of both of these Topper films and about the high quality of the prints on this DVD. But I would argue that Topper Returns is funnier by far than the original. It's zanier, more inspired, has a better cast, and isn't trying so hard to imitate The Thin Man characters. Blondell, Eddie Rochester and company are an absolute hoot. This is a classic "B", one you won't want to miss. Topper Returns ranks well with any of the classic screwball films.

In any case, buy the DVD of both films. It provides first-rate entertainment.

Movie Review: nostalgic comedy
Summary: 4 Stars

Enjoyable, but not rip roaring humorous. I think it was more driven about showing off its then new technology than the script. It was fun, and I enjoyed the old fashioned humor. The fun enjoyed by the Kirbys seemed to be exclusively boozing. It could have been a great movie with a better script and directing. Constance Bennett and Cary Grant were great and Roland Young and Billie Burke were fine additions.

Movie Review: Great movies but not at this price.....
Summary: 4 Stars

I agree with most reviewers.....I loved both of them but what the hell is going on here with these people selling these at these ridiculous prices...both these movies are in Public Domain...I agree Hallmark & Artisan have done a great job on these movies...but $55, don't think so.....I just downed the Public Domain copies and made my own DVD.....FREE
