Movie Review: Great movie, but truly lousy MGM DVD transfer

This '60s heist movie sparkles, dazzles, and charms with its strong international cast, story adapted from an Eric Ambler mystery novel, and typically great direction from Jules (Rafifi) Dassin. Dassin gets a truly captivating performance from his wife Melina Mercouri as a thief obsessed with stealing the Topkapi emeralds, and an Academy Award-winning comic turn from Peter Ustinov. This was my favorite movie of all time when watching it on tv as a child. I waited a while to see it on DVD. Sadly, MGM seems to have transferred the movie through a vat of mud. it's a 1960s movie, so it isn't one action scene after another---but it also isn't as stoopid as today's action movies.
when the criminals finally get around to stealing the jewel you'll probably agree that the scene was ripped off for the very inferior first MISSION IMPOSSIBLE movie.
the origonal novel was more akin to THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, so you can also learn about film adaptions from this movie, since it's more PINK PANTHER than the novel it was taken from.

What do you get when you put Melina Mercouri, Peter Ustinov, Maximilian Schell, Robert Morley, Akim Tamiroff, et. al., together? An unlikely crew of sophistcated bumblers thrown together to pull off a heist that is both very dangerous, and very funny. The actual robbery scene, done in complete silence, without music or effects, is a heart stopper I have never seen duplicated in motion pictures. So, if an international cast and an exotic location is your cup of tea, give Topkapi a look.Movie Review: A Delightful Adventure
