Movie Reviews of Top Secret!

Movie Review: Some gut busting sight gags and dialogue.
Summary: 5 Stars

The most under rated, and probably under viewed of all the Zucker, Abrams, Zucker flicks. Compared to the "Airplanes" and "Naked Guns," this 1 may rate higher on the sight gag scale for laughs-too many to mention w/o giving away the whole flicks surprises. And some of the more original scenes of all these great comedy writers work. Kilmer's perfect for his role. Scenes to watch for?: - Underwater "old west type" fight scene - parachute jump w/ dramatic, romantic dialogue - the resistance's hilarious going over their plan w/ model for detail (think Doc from "Back To The Future's", "Sorry it's not built to scale" comments.) - the cow disguise scene. That's just off the top of my head. A cast of relatively unknowns for the most part carries a movie that anyone who loved "Airplane" should see. But like "Airplane," with your full attention. It's 1 of those movies where you turn your head for a second, and you miss some hilarity. 1 of my all time fave comedies.

Movie Review: Still funny after all these years...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is still one of the funniest movies ever made. It spoofs spy movies, World War II flicks AND 1950's musicals. Somehow this all works. Completely ridiculous and laden with sight gags, many have tried to emulate the formula of this film. See the atrociously unfunny "Spy Hard", the appropriately named "2001: A Space Travesty" and more recently, "Not Another Teen Movie!" and "Scary Movie 2."
"Top Secret" is still the ultimate silly movie. Because you see, it still manages to be funny. And a lot of the humor is completely spontaneous. The cow with jackboots, Chocolat Mousse drop kicking one of the Nazi's/East German Stormtroopers and yelling "Vive La France!" Hillary bidding everybody goodbye, but "I'll miss you most of all, Mr. Scarecrow!" Despite somehow managing to spoof three different genres, they still manage to spoof a whole bunch of movies, including "The Blue Lagoon" and the James Bond flicks. Ah, this is good stuff. ;-)

Movie Review: Discover new laughs with every viewing
Summary: 5 Stars

Top Secret! Combines all the best of comedy: parody (mostly of spy films and the Elvis genre), slapstick, sight gags, puns and plays on words, and just general laughs of both a juvenile and high-brow nature. Some of the funniest moments take place in the background, behind the main scene. This is a film you can watch twice in a row and pick up different laughs each time. I also just discovered that there are even laughs to be found in the closing credits, and I've been watching this movie for 2 decades now! Top Secret! is one of those magical movies that appeals to viewers of all ages, even those who didn't live in the time of the Berlin Wall, and there are jokes to appeal to all senses of humor.

There is no obvious way to tell this is a 1980's movie--it stays perfectly in the time period the directors were trying to portray. This is a gem and I'm glad it wasn't tainted by any attempts at a sequel.

Movie Review: A classic of crazy humor.
Summary: 5 Stars

My first viewing of "Top Secret!" was a bit off-putting. I loved the off-the-wall humor of "Airplane!", but what was _this_? Apparently, a lot of other people reacted the same way, because "Top Secret!" bombed badly at the box office, despite a measly budget of $8M.

The second time -- and every time thereafter -- it was hilarious. The problem -- as ZAZ are quick to admit on the running commentary -- is that it's a mix of genres -- Elvis musicals combined with WWII spy films. It's disorienting -- the _first_ time you see it. The following times (of which there's likely to be many), you can just sit back and howl at the crazy jokes and non-sequitur humor.

There's another reason to own "Top Secret!" -- it has one of _the_ great scenes in the history of motion pictures. Remember the incredibly long single take Orson Welles starts "Touch of Evil" with? ZAZ do the same thing, except... Well, you have to see it to believe it.

Movie Review: A Greatly Underrated Film
Summary: 5 Stars

This film was done by the same people who made "Airplane" and the "Police Squad" movies. I enjoy this film more. It is just as silly as the others, if not more so. I think the jokes work better in this film.

The film takes place in some unnamed East German-like country. The time is something between today, the 50s, the 40s and somewhere in between. It parodies teen rock-and-roll movies, french resistance films, Blue Lagoon and a bunch of other stuff thrown in for good measure. Val Kilmer plays a rock-and-roll teen idol named Nick Rivers. He gets involved with a bunch of resistance fighters in a represive soviet block country that plans on taking over the world. Funnier than it sounds. Surreal comedy at its best. (The guard falling off the castle wall is one of my favorite gags.)

How can you argue with a movie that starts with a Beach Boys parody called "Skeet Surfing"? ...
