Movie Reviews of Top Hat

Movie Review: Totally marvellous dancing and songs
Summary: 4 Stars

It was wonderful to watch this film which was made in the 40's and yet has incredibly inventive and fresh dance routines that are timeless. Fred Astaire was a genius over 50 years ago and still is to this day, one of the all time most incredible of dancers. He seems to move impossibly, yet so effortlessly. The Top Hat dance number, of the film's name, is utterly engaging and the music is so familiar that it is a real treat to see him dancing to such a well known tune. Its a classic containing the talents of two of the most unbelievably talented dancing duo's in the world, ever.

Movie Review: Forgettable story; unforgettable numbers
Summary: 4 Stars

This was Fred Astaire's favorite film. The story is so mindless and predictable that you could sleep through the boy-meets-girl-boy-loses-girl-boy-gets-girl-in-the-end nonsense. That part of the film is done poorly here with little that is fresh in the way of dialogue or plot. But then there are the dance routines! Beautifully photographed and staged, Astaire and Rogers are mesmerizingly graceful and elegant. I'm sure that this film inspired countless couples to take up ballroom dancing. Add a great Irving Berlin score, and you have a hit.

Movie Review: Simply Wonderful
Summary: 4 Stars

I truly enjoyed this movie! I was utterly amazed by the dancing numbers. Brought back wonderful childhood memories. Great numbers! Thanks for all the reviews when I chose this movie. It was amazing!

Movie Review: 4 Star Astaire and Rogers, 1 star commentary
Summary: 3 Stars

"Top Hat", the 4th Astaire and Rogers film, is possibly their most famous. While it has obvious pluses such as the dancing, of course, the comedians in support, particularly Helen Broderick, Rogers looking great particularly in that famous feathered dress and the fantasy art deco sets, it does have some negatives: the plot, direct from French farce and of compounded stupidity, some poor matching of medium shots with close ups (Helen Broderick again), a mannered and corny performance from Astaire and a stiff one from Rogers. The print is not very good too which is disappointing.

That aside, this DVD is a good package with some excellent extras: an informative featurette on the music and dances of the film; an OK short with Bob Hope and the terrific cartoon "Page Miss Glory", a take off of the Warner Brother's film of the same name with Marion Davies. However, there is one glaring negative. The commentary by Larry Billman, accompanied by Astaire's daughter Ava, is awful. Billman comes across as a simpering fan. Ava has some nice personal memories of her father which are interjected here and there but Billman treats her with such misplaced reverence, thanking her all the time "for sharing that with us", that he makes her warmth insipid. The featurette duplicates much of the commentary and is far superior.

The DVD is best value if purchased as one of the Astaire/Rogers Collections.
