Movie Reviews of Top Hat

Movie Review: Great gift for Grams!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my Grandmother who's in a nursing home along with a few other "Classic" titles. She's been the most popular girl in the place since :)

Movie Review: Great Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

One of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rodgers best movies, if you like old musicals this is a much see.

Movie Review: Fred dances in an out of hearts
Summary: 4 Stars

A romantic relationship begins, ends, and resumes based on mistaken identity. During some late-night tap dancing in a London hotel room of a friend, Jerry Travers (Fred Astaire) spoils the sleep of Dale Tremont (Ginger Rogers), a fashion showpiece for Alberto (Erik Rhodes), in the room below. Her complaints lead to Jerry's immediate attempts to nurture mutual attraction. Resistant Dale eventually accedes, cleverly depicted by her tapping in step with Jerry, whose name she never bothers to obtain. She later learns that a married man named Horace Hardwick (Edward Everett Horton) occupies the room above hers. Assuming Jerry is Horace, Dale wants nothing else to do with him. Bewildered Jerry chases Dale to Venice, Italy in an attempt to rekindle her affection before she succumbs to the advances of Alberto. The plot becomes even zanier after Dale confronts Horace's wife (who turns out to be Alberto's financial sponsor) about her husband's misconduct.

The plot is so far fetched that it only provides a vehicle for opportunities to watch the stars dance. Expect some clever improvisational tap dancing by the master during the grand opening of a stage performance by Fred Astaire. The story is a bit obtuse for my tastes but I longed to see a classic Fred-and-Ginger movie to experience the chemistry so often spoken of. This likely wasn't the best example to me though hailed by Astaire fans. If you enjoy slapstick comedy with talented dance and lavish stage shows, go to town with TOP HAT.

Movie quote: Dale Tremont: "Madge, have you any objections if I scare your husband so that he'll never look at another woman?" Madge Hardwick: "Dale, no husband is ever too scared to look."

Movie Review: Five Stars For the Numbers;Three Stars for the Story
Summary: 4 Stars

"Top Hat" is indispensible for the choreography and inspired dance routines by Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. When they pair off on the dance floor the chemistry is combustible. The song score by Irving Berlin is excellent. Did this man know how to write a bad song? It may be sacrilege to many that if it wasn't for these elements the film would be fairly mundane. The mistaken identity subplot is pure sitcom. Fortunately, Astaire and Rogers and supporting player Edward Everett Horton were better than average light comedians so they elevate this lightweight material. One also has to bear in mind that this is a Depression era film and audiences responded to this froth as an escape from the hardships in their lives. It's also an interesting mirror on the social mores of the time as to what would constitute scandalous behavior. We should be grateful that this record of two artists like Astaire and Rogers is preserved and an art form can be preserved for the enjoyment of future generations.

Movie Review: Putting on the Ritz to Irving Berlin tunes
Summary: 4 Stars

To get the picture of why this movie was such a hit , you have to realize that 1935 was the height of the depression in America.
Here we have a picture of a life of extreme ( almost heaven like)
living by a beautiful couple who sing and dance.
Fred Astaire was one of the first musical superstars in the movies.
Some of his stomping steps are more Spanish than anything,
but he was popular for his singing as well.
Ginger Rogers was the perfectly beautiful blond bomb shell who could dance.
The acting wasn't really much, but we don't expect it to be.
Rich people hiring airplanes to fly down to the Italian Rivera
and staying in hotels
that remind one of Roman palaces?
The result is still fantastic 80 years later!
