Movie Reviews of Top HatMovie Review: Top Notch Summary: 5 Stars
This is a brilliant film. It starts right out of the blocks, with Fred's tap barrages disturbing Ginger's sleep...and logically moves into the great comedy of the buggy scene...and the thrill of the pavilion dance in the rain. The first 25 minutes are beyond the pale of criticism...It is PERFECT....and it's pretty rare to employ that word.
I think it drags just a little in the middle...until the climax of the great, evocative, and extremely graceful "Cheek to Cheek" song and dance. Punctuated by Fred getting slapped.
As their first original script for them, it's an example of the "integrated" musical. But what is interesting still today, is that it is not overly integrated. There's something lost, imho, when too much integration makes the numbers too flat with the plot...so there is no anticipation, and no high points, no low points...making the plot dominate over the brilliance, and often...as in this film...the incredibly rich nuance of their dancing...supported by one of the greatest music scores of all time, by Irving Berlin.
The end of the film is also quite rightly capped by a brilliant dance of joy and celebration..."The Piccolino". It just doesn't get any better than this...at least until "Let's Face the Music and Dance"...and of course, the even greater...to many viewers..."Swing Time".
Generations of audiences, way into the far future, will be delighted with the sparkling intelligence that went into the creation of this timeless film.
Movie Review: A Classic not to be missed! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a must-see classic from 1935, nominated for 4 Academy Awards, features one of the best dance team ever: Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. With the wonderful music of Irving Berlin, you'll hear the famous "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" number as well as many other memorable tunes. This film ranks as perhaps the best of the 10 films Astaire and Rogers have made. The Art Deco sets, the dancing, the humor, and the romance are all top notch. The DVD features many interesting extras including an interviews with Ava Astaire, Fred's daughter, and film historian, Larry Billman's detailed explanation why this film is such a major classic. The DVD authoring was made from a pristine original in glorious B&W . The image quality is superb for such an old film. HIGHLY recommended! [...]
Movie Review: Top Hat Summary: 5 Stars
Finally, the long-awaited Astaire-Rogers classics are being released on DVD, and "Top Hat" (arguably the best of the series, along with "Swing Time") has never looked or sounded better. The plot is soufflé-light, but runs on the divine hilarity of its ensemble players, in particular Eric Blore as persnickety butler Bates, and Erik Rhodes as Beddini, rival to Dale's affections. Beyond that ineffable Astaire-Rogers chemistry, the real stars are the buttery Berlin score (highlight: "Cheek to Cheek") and dancing sequences that define beauty and grace in motion. Heaven-I'm in heaven!
Movie Review: A Wonderful Classic Summary: 5 Stars
Fred Astaire plays a (fancy this) stage dance performer signing up for a new show. As he's dancing in the producer's hotel room, he disturbs the sleep of the very beautiful Ginger Rogers. It's a wonderful ride from there. One of the songs that appears here is "Cheek to Cheek". This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I can't recommend it highly enough!
Movie Review: Just Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
My daughter(11)and I watched this movie one night and we just loved it! She wants to watch it again and again....Neither of us can wait to watch another Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers movie. They were absolutely magic in this and to my surprise, it was quite funny. If you love old time movies that just make you feel good, you have to have this one!
