Movie Reviews of Top Gun (Widescreen Special Collector's Edition)Movie Review: Fly Into the Danger Zone Summary: 5 Stars
Tom Cruise stars in this 80s blockbuster about navy fighter pilots and the Top Gun flight school in Miramar, California.
Cruise stars as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. He and his navigator, Goose (Anthony Edwards) have been sent to Top Gun to learn the lost art of aerial dogfighting. They will be going up against the best of the best, as only 1% of navy pilots qualify for Top Gun. Top Gun is commanded by Viper (Tom Skerritt) and Jester (Michael Ironside); two former combat pilots who have returned as instructors.
Once there, Maverick and Goose find themselves up against some other very good pilots; but one stands out above the rest: Iceman (Val Kilmer). Ice and his navigator Slider (Rick Rossovich) have their sights set on winning the coveted Top Gun trophy, but Mav and Goose intend to win as well. A strong rivalry has been born; Ice and his by-the-book mentality versus Mav and his edge-of-the-envelope style.
Another person is also working at Top Gun. Charlie (Kelly McGillis) is a civilian contractor who represents the Pentagon. She reports to them on matters involving the Top Gun pilots. Mav and Goose see her in a bar and sing "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin" to her, but at that time, they don't know who she is. Mav immediately is attracted to her. He is shocked to see her walk into class on base the next day. Undeterred, he begins his pursuit, even though Charlie says she doesn't date students.
Meanwhile, the competition for the Top Gun trophy has begun, and Ice and Maverick quickly establish themselves as the top two contenders for the title. There are lots of different aerial combat sequences.
About halfway through their training, Goose's wife (Meg Ryan) and young son come for a visit. Maverick and Charlie have become very close by this time, and all of them go out together. However, during one of their training missions, Maverick and Goose are involved in an accident and are forced to bail out of their plane. Goose doesn't survive. After the accident, Maverick loses his edge, blaming himself for Goose's death, even though he is cleared of any wrong-doing by a court of inquiry. He leaves the Top Gun program.
However, Charlie finds him at the airport and talks to him. Afterward, he visits Viper at his house and Viper tells him about his father and how he flew with his father in Vietnam. Originally thought to have been a deserter, Viper tells Maverick that he in fact saved three other planes in combat before dying himself. Mav decides to go back and graduate with his Top Gun class. After graduation, Iceman, Slider, Maverick, Hollywood (Whip Hubley) and Wolfman (Barry Tubb) are sent to the Persian Gulf to protect a disabled ship that has drifted into foreign waters. Tensions are high and confrontation is likely. Will Maverick be able to put aside his memories of Goose and fight, or will Iceman and Slider be left to fend for themselves?
This is the movie that launched Tom Cruise to superstar status. He does an excellent job as Maverick. Anthony Edwards, Val Kilmer, Tom Skerritt, Michael Ironside, Kelly McGillis, and the rest of the cast give fine performances as well. The story is well-conceived, and the action sequences are exciting to watch.
I give this movie my highest recommendation. It has remained popular for 20 years, and it never gets old. Watch "Top Gun" and see the navy's best pilots in action.
Summary of Top Gun (Widescreen Special Collector's Edition)In Top Gun, Tom Cruise stars as Maverick, a talented training pilot in an elite U.S. school for fighter pilots. When he stumbles upon some MiG's over the Persian Gulf, and his wingman panics, Maverick cleverly talks him through the situation to safety. Consequently, he is moved up in rank and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he has several conflicts with other students while trying to live up to his deceased father's reputation. Unable to cope with the death of his best friend, and fellow pilot, Goose, Maverick contemplates dropping out, but follows through with his dream and ultimately becomes one of the "best of the best." Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. --Tom Keogh
