Movie Reviews of Top Gun [HD DVD]Movie Review: Another Must HAVE not available on Bluray Summary: 5 Stars
O.K. time the official review. Just picked up last copy at BestBuy (sold out in a day). The 4 stars for picture is acurate. Solid HD Picture no grain, artifacting, unwanted movement except on stock footage of flight scenes (mostly at the start of film). Beautiful picture. The audio more than meets the challenge of this movie. One observation, as mentioned the DTS has some certain advantages over Dolby True HD. Well I am here to confirm, the DTS option is by FAR the best track on the disk. Much more dynamic, immersive, and just plain louder by several DBs. I found it an obvious choice, much to my dismay over the HD audio. And yes unlike alot of people, I do have it set up correctly. More than correctly. I am using King Cobra Audioquest interconnects for the 5.1 channel outs from the XA1 to my Denon 3806. I think there may be some mistake with sound. Usually it's the TrueHD that has the difference. Maybe they are mislabeled on the disk? Bottom line: Not only is this a MUST HAVE for your HDDVD collection, but a great example of what HDDVD delivers to the experience. I have a dedicated theater room. 133" screen and sound to match, even have real Buttkickers in the theater chairs. This movie makes my investment worth every penny. Word of caution: If you don't have a serious system, the sound will punkout your system. Listen at low levels or pony up and get something with some backbone '' High current Denon, Pioneer elite, Yamaha 2700 or higher or seperates like B&K, Krell, Macintosh etc). Extreme cinematic dynamics, just like the movies, and isn't that the whole idea? Highly Recommended
Movie Review: Talk to me Goose... Fly me to the danger zone... Summary: 5 Stars
Oh the testosterone that flows throughout this movie. This movie could have been used as a recruiting film for the U.S. Navy when it was released. Everyone that saw it likely wanted to be a Naval aviator.
The video here does 'pop' nicely, and in many ways this is a great movie to use as a reference type disc (one to show off HD features). The master that was used is not perfectly clean, but it is still in excellent condition and the movie looks great for it.
The soundtrack still gets my pulse pounding and I can and do sit intently watching this movie dedicating 100% of my attention to the film through large parts (not something I always do as I tend to multitask a lot and am easily distracted when a movie isn't holding my attention).
Anthony Edwards back when he hair, Meg Ryan before she became a star, Kelly McGillis looking quite tantalizing, and Tom Cruise well before the jumping on the couch stage of his career. Not to mention Tom Skerrit, Val Kilmer and others including an easily lost Tim Robbins appearing for just a brief instant.
Like others, I hope for a special edition version in the future. Something that adds some (considering there are really none here) special features. In the meantime, the film is still great fun and the video is just so impressive I can't downgrade it at all. Yes, fly me to the danger zone! (Please :-) )
Movie Review: Awesome Summary: 5 Stars
I feel the need, the need for speed !
This is perhaps the most important line in the entire movie which was later used in other movies and games.
TOP GUN is by far the best movie around dogfighting and war planes in general.
Maverick ( Tom Cruise ) although he is still young in the acting business performs admirably and makes a character that will never be forgot.
TOP GUN got a face lift in the HD-DVD version , the entire film looks a lot better and the sound is crystal clear. This movie is a must not only for collectors but for anyone that loves war planes and an adrenaline rush movie.
Movie Review: a classic reborn Summary: 5 Stars
I am so glad they put this in HD, I LOVED this movie. I still think it is one of the best movies Tom ever did...pre-crazy Tom or not.
For the stooges who downgraded the movie because it was on HD, get a life. There are tons of great movies on Blu-Ray that I cannot watch because I don't plan to be the dupe that pays $700 for a DVD player. That said, I still don't bash movies or studios for choosing one format over the other...it is what it is...
So, if you are financially sound-minded, and can afford the >$300 for a HD Player....this is a must have movie!!!
Movie Review: Steven Burke - Grow up! Summary: 5 Stars
To the person who uses a review feature to complain about Paramount dropping Blu-Ray -- GROW UP! Go complain to Fox, Disney and Sony for not supporting HD DVD, or stop being a complete hypocrite! Sony is the one that brought on this fiasco of a format war, trying to strong-arm the consumer into their overpriced technology. Go cry somewhere else.
Better yet, go play with your PS3. Oh, I forget, Sony forgot to develop any decent games for it.
