Movie Reviews of Tool - Schism

Movie Review: Astounding
Summary: 5 Stars

Ok, to start I'm not a kid. I'm 23, I just had to use the kids review cuz my account isn't working.

---

Today, I got the Schism DVD from Borders that I had pre-ordered previously. I was stunned from the minute I opened the wrapping carefully to make sure I could store the DVD in it again. The artwork was way more than I could have ever hoped for, thinking there might not even be a booklet. Wow, was I wrong. The artwork was equivalent to Salival and beyond and could stand alone being a lot better than most every band's artwork. But, no need to compare things against other things.

I placed Schism into my DVD player (thinking Schism is more of an introduction and Parabol(a) would make a more climatic ending) and the beautiful and powerful opening of the Tool logo certainly set the mood of the DVD introducing the rest of the DVD perfectly. The video quality and sound were stunning and it was so refreshing to have the full quality video in place of the grainy internet version everyone downloaded. Next was the commentary and although I expected someone more involved with the production of the video it still was a perfect addition to the DVD. It contrasted the darkness of the DVD with some more lightheartedness. But, quickly the tone changed back to more seriousness and I came across the Lustmord remix of Schism. I couldn't believe it. The vastness and depth his version added to the DVD so well finishing the DVD with the perfect note.

All and all, the DVD is astounding. Maybe not to you, but I'm very open to new releases. I believe you should let your mind deceiver the message of them and let your mind find what it likes about it. I'm still getting to like everything but I can tell you this happens to be one of the best DVD - music purchases I have ever made.

Movie Review: The single most unique DVD I've ever purchased
Summary: 5 Stars

Pop the DVD in and all you see is flames and a spooky looking figure from an anatomy book. Three frames on the left as if they were chapters and then this crazy anatomy book dude staring at you as if it were your own reflection minus the skin. So, I start with the first one. After a very crazy and slightly disturbing and very unsettling intro, it goes into the video for Schism. The video is nothing new, and they are again unsettling and disturbing to watch. It is just like any other tool video, so that's a good thing if you are a fan of their previous videos.

Now, this is where it starts to get even weirder. After watching the first video, I selected the 2nd flame from the menu. I have never heard anything like it. It is the same video, only this time with some dude commenting on it. All it is is a guy commenting on a video, but he does it twice. One commentary plays out your left speaker, while a second plays from the right. Played together it is the single most unique experience I have ever heard. It is like getting to hear two slices of an infinite number of parallel universes.

Then there is the third spiral. Doesn't seem to be doing much. Sounds like a loop. Sounds like a loop. Sounds like a loop. Seems to sound like a loop. Seems to sound kind of like a loop. Seems to sound a bit like a loop. Seems to start to sound a bit not like a loop.

Hmm.

Where is the remix track it talks about on the cover?!?

Movie Review: Another great reminder that brilliance takes time
Summary: 5 Stars

When Tool released these DVDS, I thought it was brilliant. No other bands really release their videos one by one like this, let alone when the last album you put out is 4 or 5 years ago. I'm sure that this was a very elaborate way to put Tool back into your life before their 2006 album comes out, but this DVD has very original material on here worth the little money you pay for this DVD and the Parabola DVD.

The DVDs are similar. They both feature a remix (a very dark, drone-induced remix for Schism), a dual-commentary (this one by the noise rock band The Jesus Lizard's vocalist David Yow), and the simple link to the video by itself.

When you open the fold-out case, it includes a book featuring screen shots from the Schism video. It also includes what looks like a conceptual painting of the two actors in the video, as well and photos of the makeup and crew shots for the video. Also includes artwork to reflect the vein/plant "thing" that is inside one of the actors' skins.

I had to give this a 5 star rating because, even though its only one song per disc being represented, the quality of the DVD is superior to a cheaper version that might've been. It includes everything (except maybe a behind-the-scenes featurette) that I wanted to see about the video represented here with brilliant packaging and time put into it. Go buy it now!

Movie Review: Perhaps a little late in coming, but not a dissappointment
Summary: 5 Stars

Rating: A-
For all you jaded tool fans out there that complain that Tool never seems to whet your appetite well enough, (year by year as we all wait in anticipation for their next forthcoming album), you all have lost the overall point of what art is. Honestly, with all the negative complaints put up lately, I'd be surprised if Tool never again released another side project of their work to tide fans over, after the complete abscence of any sort of respect for the work that goes into not only their music, but here specifically, their videos as well. In my opinion the package design is top notch, while the video here included for schism, is excellent as well, and now is finally made officially available for release. The production stills located in the case add to the conceptual process of making the ideas come to life. Perhaps this could have used a couple extra bells and whistles but all in all, don't you think that Tool did you, their fans a favor by at least releasing these, and not making you just wait until some time this year for their follow-up to Lateralus. Suck it up and stop being such fools, appreciate art in the form that it is given to you, and wait patiently for their next subsequent release.

Movie Review: People are OVERLY CRITICAL! SCHISM & PARABOLA ARE OUT OF CONTROL
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all let me say that certain people reviewing this DVD are very angry pepople, ALL of their reviews are ALL NEGATIVE, SEE A PATTERN HERE? not naming any names but saying that schism is a boring video? Come on!! I love the way people complain so much about stuff like this...but their probably at home right now playing air guitar to their brand new schism and parabola DVD. I love the DVDs, I think TOOL is a great band, arguably one of the best. And yeah, Adam is NOT responsible for 100% of the art but what better that someone in from the band who knows what the music is all about to be the one deciding what art to use! You people complain SO much, I buy the DVD watch it, enjoy it and watch it again. Because in the end all it is...is ENTERTAINMENT!! And SO expesive at 6 bucks each!! LOL Besides when you make your own band and are with them for 10 years and have numerous albums and start making videos that put TOOL's videos to shame then you have ALL THE RIGHT IN THE WORLD TO COMPLAIN or call people greedy, gimme a freakin' break. but i'm speaking in general terms of course...not to anyone on this review page...
