Movie Reviews of Tool - Parabola

Movie Review: Collectors candy
Summary: 4 Stars

The Menu and 1st and 3rd choices on the DVD are nicely put together and truly is an extension of Lateralus. I'm surprised at the commentary and disappointed that it's something I turned off within the first 20 seconds. I was hoping for something tremendous and got something that frankly was a waste of audio track. What I think would have been cool is to have something LIKE "Faaip De Oiad" on the alternate audio track. Something paranormal, something unexplained. Or maybe commentary from the Director, the actors, the costume techs,. . .anyone but who wound up doing it. Yeah you know tool, blah blah blah, the record industry sucks, blah blah blah, hey those look like grapes, blah blah blah. if anything, the commentary that is on the disc cheapens the masterpiece that is the video. it even cheapens the audio on the 3rd menu choice (which if you listen for long enough, is VERY addicting!) I read reviews that say the commentary is funny. . .that makes me sad. it would have been better if it was incoherent rambling. unfortunately you hear exactly what they're saying in full digital quality. Aside from the 2nd menu item on the DVD, this is a great deal on Amazon, and for the video alone, should find it's way to your Tool Library. I eagerly await all the Tool videos collected on one DVD with better (or even NO) commentary. before you 'fans' tell me, "you don't get it" You're right; I don't get it. the video is amazing, a masterpiece, every frame could be a work of art, The commentary is stupid and almost makes fun of the video. Why would I take an original Mucha print, and pour paint thinner on it? F-Jello Biafra.

Movie Review: It's only freaking 10 dollars
Summary: 4 Stars

If you enjoy Tool, spend twenty dollars on these DVDs and shut-up - you like the videos, you like the packaging, and you are probably a tool in every sense of the word anyway. This is a band that says they named themselves "Tool" because they wanted to show that releasing negative emotion - namely, crying, is the tool that is essential to healing. Still, I can't help but think they did it hoping they would be successful enough to be able to get people to pay money for t-shirts that say Tool on them. The joke is on us because they are a truly amazing band, and we are living in a consumer culture and are all tools just the same.
The DVD in question, Parabola, is not filled to the brim with extras. The video is fantastic and personally think it trumps their other videos, but the best part of this DVD is Jello Biafra's commentary track, which had me on the floor laughing. Seriously, I haven't had a spirited laugh like that in a long time. I don't know if Jello knew that certain things he said would be changed in speed and played simultaneously with his real-time commentary, but it has an almost mocking effect. If he did know, good for him, because of all people, Biafra should not be one to take himself seriously.
Because I am a tool like everyone else reading this, I tried breathing in time with the constantly moving menu screen (a figure much like the one on the cover of Lateralus "breathing"). I was hoping that I would break through to a higher plane of consciousness or some such thing, but I just passed out (landing directly on my 10 mint copies of signed Lateralus vinyl - how fitting).

Movie Review: tool <3s your money, & you <3 their hand in your pocket
Summary: 4 Stars

yes yes it is cool
the best video they've done yet
at least the first 10 times I watched it the climactic moments took my breath away

the remix is alright
nice & ambient & daydreamy
though it does do that thing music tracks on DVDs always do - force you to stare @ a static image the whole time

& the unmarked menus remind me of salival
but thats all gravy as well
it makes you watch that whole animation every time you click something!
thank goodness its darn cool lookin

the commentary is BS
though Slightly informative
Slightly humorous
weird how they make you listen through twice
cuz he says diff stuff in each ear
I'm glad I was watching w/ headphones

it just all comes down to
"here is a product for you to buy!
it has some 'interesting' artwork by your favorite band!
& a sticker announcing their first album in about 5 years!
it will only entertain you an hour tops
but does that $10 in your pocket really want to stay there? hmm???"

I'm just glad they're not charging $25 or something for this thing
it gives me hope that the band's not Too overboard commercial
now lets all hold our breath til may 2nd
it will feel like ten thousand days! (dun dun duuunn)

Movie Review: About what I expected
Summary: 4 Stars

Bottom line; for the price, this is a great DVD and will entertain, and for any Tool fans, definitely a recommendation to get.

The DVD itself is fairly simple, with an animated background menu and three track choices.

1) The album audio track set to the music video which is typical Tool wierdness but just perfect.

2) The same music video with dual channel comical commentary which at first is very odd, but it is actually fairly funny and I soon learned to like the comical nonsense on top of the more serious looking video, they do not go together at all!, but maybe that's the point, and it seems to work.

3) A long remix of the song. Nothing extremely great here, but a worthy remix nontheless.

The main drawbacks in my opinion is that the audio is simply stereo. With 5 years in the making and DVD format, it would have been nice to have a surround sound audio track for the song, even if it would mostly be stereo. And how about widescreen? We are in 2005 and this is a DVD, even if the music video won't fit, even some static graphics or simple repetetive animation would be a nice additon to the video.

Movie Review: $20 bucks for TOOL.......
Summary: 4 Stars

....is a deal when I usually blow $20 bucks on hookers and beer. By the way, the DVD is worth it because it is Art. Let's say Limp Biznut did the same, would you run out any buy it? No, because this is Art. Enjoy. Buy, buy, buy the new record and choke.

No, seriously, it is cool.
