Movie Reviews of Tool - Parabola

Movie Review: Absolutely worth it.
Summary: 5 Stars

It's not at all necessary to the enjoyment of this piece of art (And I do use that term without hesitation. The cover art is staggeringly gorgeous, the video itself, amazing) it's interesting to consider the intertextuality of this little DVD single, largely centred around the Melvins.

Not going to bother with a history lesson, either you do or you don't know who the Melvins are, and if you don't, then it's worth giving their stuff a gander.

The remixes for both Parabola and Schism were done by a gloomy electronica lad by the name of Lustmord, who happened to do a gloomy collaboration with the melvins last year called "The Pigs of the Roman Empire" - a longwinded, rather pretentious, but quite excellent record, released by none other than Mike Patton's Ipecac records.

Interestingly, Adam Jones is thanked in the liner notes of "The Pigs of the Roman Empire" for "making the introductions" and I do believe he's present on at least one track in instrumental form.

Around the same time, the Melvins did a collaboration that went in the complete opposite direction of "Pigs..." - "Never Breathe What You Can't See" with Jello Biafra - a much punkier, grungier side of the Melvins. Yes, the same Jello Biafra, formerly of the Dead Kennedys and the lad who happened to do the commentary on the video.

I didn't realize Jello had a hand in it until after I'd purchased the single, and that alone was worth the price of admission.

Movie Review: The single most unique DVD I've ever purchased
Summary: 5 Stars

Pop the DVD in and all you see is spirals. Three spirals on the left as if they were chapters and then a larger spiral in the background. So, I start with the first one. After a disturbing and very unsettling intro, it goes into the video for Parabola, which is a combination of tracks 6 and 7 from Lateralus. The videos are nothing new, and they are again unsettling and disturbing to watch. It is just like any other tool video, so that's a good thing if you are a fan of their previous videos, a bad thing if you were not.

Now, this is where it starts to get even creepier. After watching the first video, I selected the 2nd spiral from the menu. I have never heard anything like it. Dual commentary from Jello Biafra. All it is is a guy commenting on a video, but he does it twice. One commentary plays out your left speaker, while a second plays from the right. Played together it is the single most unique experience I have ever heard. It is like getting to hear two slices of an infinite number of parallel universes.

Then there is the third spiral. Doesn't seem to be doing much. Sounds like a loop. Sounds like a loop. Sounds like a loop. Seems to sound like a loop. Seems to sound kind of like a loop. Seems to sound a little like a loop. Seems to start to sound a little not like a loop.

Hmm.

Where is the remix track it talks about on the cover?!?

Movie Review: Parabola DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

This, as we should all acknowledge, is the first release (along with the Schism DVD) TOOL has provided us with since 2001's Lateralus. I don't know how to 'review' this since it hasn't come out yet, but I will give you my opinion, being a HUGE Tool fan. The first time I heard about it on toolband.com, I didn't think it was that big of a deal. My first impression was a result of the little information that was given about it. All we had to go with was that it would have the video. Since I'd already seen the video 57,894 times, I wasn't too excited about it. But just recently, I hear there will be commentary from the band, which is exciting, since we don't hear from them much anymore. I also hear there will be remixes (I'm hoping more than one) for both of the songs on each DVD. I must say, I'm very excited about both of them, but I'm much more excited about the Parabola DVD. The main reason is because I enjoyed the video much more, the song is longer (because it's a combination of Parabol and Parabola, making it about 10+ minutes), and because I like the song better. But that's not stopping me from getting both of the DVDs, and it shouldn't stop you either. And by the way, The artwork is BEAUTIFUL, especially on the Parabola case. Alex Grey is the greatest. Do yourself a favor and check him out too.

Movie Review: Communication will uphold our constant thought of divinity
Summary: 5 Stars

I went to Borders tonight to grasp this special DVD which we've waited so long for as Tool fans. Their video's off the most perplexing (yet amazing) album known as Lateralus. Parabol (& Parabola) takes such a magnifying jump into the wonders of life and recreates pure beauty with the help of the magnificent artist known as Alex Grey. I don't care if people say the remixes are nothing but terrible garbage, the artwork for the cases are truly unique and the video itself is in high quality. I think people should focus more on the video's (which hardly got any airplay) and grasp this as a special moment of the evolution of Tool. Including the sticker on the DVD's plastic covering, officially stating the new album release will be in Spring 2006. I mean c'mon people this is something we shouldn't just throw off as Tool fans, we have to dig deeper and feel that this is truly something magnificent. Including the contrast added due to the oh so "serious" commentary...hehe...Just give it time and you'll truly fall in love with this masterpiece...

Movie Review: the grass is always greener next to the fertilizer
Summary: 5 Stars

I could go into how the DVD brings nothing new, or how profound the Parabola video clip is. But simply put, if you like Tool, you'll like the DVD's. Not because they're great, but because they are from Tool. Whatever connectedness you have with the music of Tool will spill into whatever Tool releases. Why? Because through their music we connect with the energy of the members of the band and their energy is in everything they release. So really, there is no point to a review for this DVD. If you are a 1 star fan this DVD gets 1 star. 3 star fan, it gets 3. If you are a five star fan (then no doubt you are either very awake, or very morbid....personally i find alternating between the two to be very enlightening), then you will love this DVD. Still....one can only wonder about the symbolism Tool choose to use in their clips.
