Movie Reviews of Tool - ParabolaMovie Review: People Dont Read.... so Tool is just an image to them Summary: 5 Stars
Tool has got to be the deepest musical groups in the world!!!IF any one knows anything about sacred geometry or spirituality then they would know that tool is NOT dark at all. There seemingly dark videos and lyrics are just reflections of the misery that man has created for himself.(read OSHO,Eckhart Tolle, David Icke, Drunvalo)To truly reflect that self created misery and anguish.... you must be the light itself. Tool is purely positive musical force in the world because of their power to portray what we as humans do to ourselves in a way that requiers You being there and experienceing it...few artists can bring you into that place...but none as well as TOOL and their videos!!!..That sounds crazy but you really have to UNDERSTAND their lyrics and videos.Like i said, Most people dont read or no anything about the stuff these guy are actually into because if you were to actually study what these guys study to come up with this stuff most people would call you insane...not because its about worsiping darkness...no but these guys really are about helping all of humanity..With No doubt Tool studies things that most people cant even begin to comprehend so thier videos just seem like wierd dark art.Subjects in their videos deal with so much as to contain political conspiracy to other dimenional travel, death, birth, enlightenment, and so on...words cant really explain. And it is soooo much more. New meaning arises with every watch. When the human race is ready tool will be reconized for its beauty. But Like all genius in the world. Its importance is always ahead of its time...when the world catches up to what they portray in their videos and realizes its not just "Music" it will probably be to late to learn some of the lessons they were trying to teach....We all are the Tool......... we just dont know how to use it right...thats why things get messed up in the end.Our purpose on earth is to learn how to use this TOOL called a human body, This TOOL called a Brain, This TOOL called a SOUL, To go beyond our limitations... To become one with all that is...you will see this theme played out in almost all thier videos and lyrics...especially PARABOLA...it is way DEEP...way beyond anything..uncomparable...unique...one of a kind...It gets into how man's understanding of science caused the destruction of "seemingly lower lifeforms" to man's regonition of his interconectedness with all of life and his return to the oneness that he fell from. Ten minutes that basically cover the whole story of what human evolution is ALL ABOUT!!! This is not a Band...but a message...they just happen to move it through the form of Music.. Before buying this...OPEN YOUR EYES...OPEN YOUR MIND...GEt ready..and i do mean get ready..prepare yourself to understand what they mean... or else all Tool will ever be to you is just another "BAND" playing a song and making a video...
Movie Review: At long, long last... Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, I disagree with Donna Peyton's rating of four stars... how can you rate a product that hasn't been released? Simply, by knowing most of it's content, and based on from whom it comes. Since we're writing about a product that's yet to be released, let's use that criteria.
That said (or written), you can't give Tool a 4 or less star rating since it's one of the most compromised bands on the scene in every sense.
First, musically, they are astonishing and proposing performers (still waiting for them to come to Mexico and play live), loyal to themselves and most of all, trendsetters. They are a big lesson for uncompromised, formula-based so called pop stars wich are only lab works and music for the quick ear (Ashlee Simpson, anyone?). I have yet to find someone whom I play Tool's music to and not say "Wow, that's amazing", wether they're metal, prog or pop lovers. Quality shines. If you don't like rock or heavy music, just hear Disposition and Reflection (though you shouldn't leave Triad out, since it's intended to be one piece altogether) from the Lateralus album and you will LISTEN to what I mean.
Second, visually speaking, the videos prove that, even if this DVD doesn't come with any extras (wich it does), just by seeing the Schism and Parabol-Parabola videos, you get your money's worth. This band is also greatly defined by the awesome art design of their visual work. You may find their videos disturbing and dark, but art (and life) is often that way.
Third, every product they release is so art compromised that you almost fear to touch it... simply beautiful packaging and artwork, just remember Lateralus', Aenima's and Salival's (hell, everything they've released) design, artwork and packaging and you can not disagree. Beautiful. Period. Commercial? Sure, but in a merchandising way, they give you your money's worth, so you can't complain.
If you can only complain of one thing about them, is their little by little way of iformation release, but, if you're a fan, you end up enjoying that too. That's Tool's way of doing things. I find myself checking the webpage every third day or so trying to decode the hidden clues to their releases and activities and hoping for a new bit of info.
This is a full package band, the likes of Pearl Jam or U2 (both of them coming to Mexico soon, so come on Tool!!!). You just have to love them, in a swamp of crappy fast-food music, it's bands like these that make your day, and your ear.
So, based on this, it's five stars. Hell, ten stars.
Can't wait to have this DVD on in my Home Theater, and I hope the next album is released soon.
Movie Review: A wonderful video with some interesting side material. Summary: 5 Stars
Those of you who have seen and understand the "Parabola" video definitely don't need me to tell you about it, and suffice it to say for those of you who haven't that it is very deeply symbolic, spritiually-inclined, and intellectual. Adam Jones always does a wonderful job of visually depicting the lyrical meanings of Tool's songs, and this is no exception. The craftsmanship of each of the animated characters, especially that of the very small grey individual in its awe-inspiring dissected corpse scene, is striking. Tricky appears in the video for the "Parabola" (non-"Parabol") portion, fitting the part of the soulful protagonist rather strikingly. Thus we are offered a wonderful music video, and that alone is what should attract you to this DVD single--certainly not the extras. They are secondary, and tend to veer from the original spirit.
That said, the dual commentary by Jello Biafra is intended to be funny, not holy writ, so try seeing it for what it is and you'll probably get a kick out of it. A lot of his comments throughout the video are extremely funny no matter how seriously you take Tool's videos. Additionally, he does mention some insightful comments about his band and his relationship with Adam Jones, which, however brief, are interest-piquing.
The Brian Lustmord remix of the original song is a deep, lengthy listen. It follows a much more ethereal, mantra-esque format by comparison with the original. It's certainly worth a full listen on high-quality speakers at least a few times through. You really have to surrender yourself to it to "get it", though, because attempting to consciously analyze the remix is just going to frustrate you. Use your right brain to listen. Also, you may be frustrated that it can't be ripped directly to your computer's audio files, but something so esoteric is really not intended for that sort of portability ("meditation on the go"?). Or perhaps Tool want putting the remixes on your computer to be a sort of self-educating adventure, who knows.
This DVD is certainly something a Tool fan or anyone rabidly interested in progressive music and art would enjoy. There are those who complain that it is too expensive or that more extras should have been included, but you really can't slam Tool for false advertising. It's a DVD single of the music video for "Parabola"--what more did you expect? For what you get, it's more than worth it.
Movie Review: Great reminder that brilliance takes time Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this DVD (along with Schism) by chance on the week they were released, and was amazed that there was actual content on here that wasn't some rehashed material DVD that they were going to cheaply put out. It's been a long time (since 2001) since Tool released anything (due to working with A Perfect Circle, of course) so this was a brilliant surprise, especially because no band puts out an independent release of their videos and not one at a time like with Parabol(a) and Schism.
The Parabola DVD is classically designed in the Tool decor that adorns all their releases. Inside the disc's fold-out package is a book featuring screen shots from the video itself, pictures of the storyboard of the ending animation sequence (Alex Grey inspired/developed?), sketches of the main stop-motion creature and Tricky designs, photos from the special FX creation of the "businessman"-looking people in the "Parabol" portion of the video, and a model of the aforementioned creature in clay form. Also includes artwork in the tradition of the Lateralus CD artwork.
The DVD menu features a Alex Grey figure who reveals his circulatory system as his heart beats on the main menu. There are three menu choices: the Parabola video, the Parabola video with accompanying dual-commentary by the witty, humorous Dead Kennedy's frontman Jello Biafra (which you can hear a lot better if you unplug one of your audio cables), and a remix version of Parabol (probably not of Parabola).
I was greatly pleased with the disc. I couldn't give it anything less than 5. It's complete and very much something to get if you're a fan. For non-fans, I think if you're a fan of the Dead Kennedys, Alex Grey, or Jello Biafra or just art in general: there's something for everyone and it was a very good choice to release this on a CD of its own.
Movie Review: Astounding Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, to start I'm not a kid. I'm 23, I just had to use the kids review cuz my account isn't working.
---
Today, I got the Parabola DVD from Borders that I had pre-ordered previously. I was stunned from the minute I opened the wrapping carefully to make sure I could store the DVD in it again. The artwork was way more than I could have ever hoped for, thinking there might not even be a booklet. Wow, was I wrong. The artwork was equivalent to Salival and beyond and could stand alone being a lot better than most every band's artwork. But, no need to compare things against other things.
The Parabola DVD was certainly different than the Schism one, conveying a much calmer atmosphere. The tone seemed less dark and more thoughtful. The menu captured the essence of the DVD extremely well, creating that perfect Toolness. I proceed in playing the video and was amazed at the video in full quality, seeing many things I had never noticed before. Next, was the commentary and it again contrasted some of the deepness/darkness with comedy, creating that perfect balance. The perfect balance, a metaphor for a lot of things in life. Finally, was the Lustmord version of Parabola and I was absolutely thrilled with the melodicness of it.
All and all, the DVD is astounding. Maybe not to you, but I'm very open to new releases. I believe you should let your mind deceiver the message of them and let your mind find what it likes about it. I'm still getting to like everything but I can tell you this happens to be one of the best DVD - music purchases I have ever made.
