Movie Reviews of Tom Selleck: Stone Cold

Movie Review: Very Pleasant Surprise
Summary: 5 Stars

I did not realize this was a made for TV movie until I read some reviews here. I actually rented it, reluctantly, from a video rental store. I say reluctantly because the title left me with the impression this would be a shallow movie about a tough cop with a shoot'em up attitude. As I said, I was pleasantly surprised.

This movie was smart, and Selleck was the perfect man for the role. The main plot is interesting and the smaller side plots really help the movie and help flesh out the personality of Sellecks character (Jesse Stone). The personal demons of Jesse Stone are nicely weaved into the plot and do not in any way diminish the movie, they actually help it.

I gave it 5 stars not because it is going down in history as one of the greatest movies ever, but because it was very entertaining and did not have alot of the typical hollywood political correctness garbage. Just a straight-forward, smart and entertaining movie. This is probably not very realistic, but you kind of wish more cops were like this.

You actually get alot for a 91 minute movie. It seems much longer (in a good way).

Movie Review: Excellent Murder Mystery
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a made for TV Movie starring Tom Selleck perfectly cast as Jesse Stone, a former L.A. Homicide detective. Robert Parker has written four Jesse Stone novels.

Jesse would be about 40 and Selleck fits the character perfectly, like a glove.

Jesse has left Los Angeles and big city life to take a job as police chief of a quiet, quaint New England town called Paradise, Massachusetts. He is divorced and a heavy drinking womanizer who misses his former wife. He still has not gotten over her after five years, even though they keep in touch by phone. He keeps his old habits of drinking and womanizing, but has committed to the new job. When several murders happen on his watch, he is forced to deal with his past. He is tough and yet has a good heart and through the difficult times he finds the inner strength to solve the crimes.

Even though Tom Selleck carries the movie, all the actors pull their weight to make this a riveting murder mystery. It is well worth the watch.

Movie Review: 1940's STYLE FILM NOIR SET IN MODERN DAY
Summary: 5 Stars

"Stone Cold" is based upon the best selling novel by Robert B. Parker. Tom Seleck plays Jesse Stone, a former L.A. Detective who has left L.A. and an ex-wife to become the Chief of Police for the fishing town of Paradise, Massachusetts. As murders take place, he must come to grips with his two favorite things - scotch and women.

"Stone Cold" was originally produced for CBS television and is one of five Jesse Stone movies available on DVD today. Although "Stone Cold" was the first of the movies, it's actually the second in the series. A prequel titled "Night Passage" was filmed secondly however I recommend viewing it first. The third movie is titled "Death in Paradise" and the forth is "Sea Change". The fifth "Thin Ice" was just released.

I highly recommend this series of movies. Without a doubt, this is Tom Seleck as his best!

Movie Review: A Selleck Fan
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read most all of Robert Parker's books, including Jesse Stone. This series of stories are adapted very nicely to film, given the time constraints. Yeah, the story-line is tailored to less than two hours and, yeah, that requires they edit out a little but, overall, the movies are all well done.

And theres Tom Selleck. I can't think of a better fit for Jesse Stone. He captures the tired, nearly alcoholic police chief beautifully. Even just walking he seems as though there's just too much weight on his shoulders.

Even though I gave five stars I must admit I get annoyed at times with Parker. Jesse could as easily be Spenser (or Spenser Jesse.) A sentence with more than three words would be nice once in a while. But that's me.

Movie Review: Jessie Stone is Rock Solid
Summary: 5 Stars

Just introduced to the old TV series with Tom Selik? (not sure of the spelling). Found out is was a TV mini series that never got the go-ahead from the big boys in the office. I found this to be a much more pleasurable show than alot of the soap operas or reality shows on TV today! A well selected cast that played their parts in accordance with the books that were written several years ago. Action/mystery & murder/romance, were all well written in the books & acted out by A-list & B-list actors from both movies & TV. Just sorry the corporate big shots didn't feel it was economically worth the investment for a full fledged season.
