Movie Reviews of Tom Jones

Movie Review: Tom Jones
Summary: 5 Stars

Winner of the Best Picture Oscar, Tony Richardson's rousing film has all vital elements in proper alignment: a brilliant screenplay by playwright John Osborne, swift pacing fueled by John Addison's zippy harpsichord score, and colorful performances from a powerhouse cast including Griffith, Joan Greenwood, Diane Cilento, Edith Evans, and a young David Warner as the priggish Mr. Blifil. York is the epitome of fair English beauty, and Finney carries off the central role with gusto. Sumptuous color photography is another bonus. Don't miss the famous Finney/Cilento eating scene.

Movie Review: A Masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Perhaps in 1968 there were fewer idiots in this world than in 2004? It's difficult to explain why this film has so many negative reviews. It is one of the best movies of the late 60s, and I have watched it so many times, nearly every scene has burned itself into my memory.
It is a perfect adaptation of Fielding's Tom Jones. Every minute of the film has so much joy, humor, excitement and hilarity that it's very difficult to sum up in this review.
If you have any taste in film at all, and are a patient and intelligent filmgoer, you'll want to buy this classic.

Movie Review: One of the Best Adaptations to Screen Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

Tom Jones is one of the greatest books in English literature- and still very fun to read. This movie captures the spirit (and the essentials of the story) perfectly. Of course, there is a great deal more detail in the book but the movie would have had to be ten times longer to capture that- of necessity screen adaptations have to pare down the story to essentials in order to fit a two to two and a half hour time frame. The result is often a movie that bares little resemblance to the original story. Not here. You will not be disappointed.

Movie Review: The original - Albert Finney
Summary: 5 Stars

An extremely successful adaptation of a rather boring book "Tom Jones - story of a foundling"

New techniques use like characters reacting directly to the camera - later taken to an extreme in Michael Caine's "ALPHIE"

Several other things in this version e.g. the sexiest eating scene, the use of a harpsicord and commentater.

The sexy eating scene makes good watching and only matched by Steve McQueen in the chess scen in The "Thomas Crown Affair"

Fun viewing

Movie Review: Possibly the Greatest movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I must say this move has been my favorite movie for a while now. I have seen quite a few movies and there is something about this one that has everything in my opinion. It is funny, has enough drama without causing any serious depression, includes a grand plot, and it just has a great sense of adventure to boot. I never get bored with it ...but I imagine those hooked on Transformers and Iron Man might fall asleep.
