Movie Reviews of Tom Dowd & the Language of MusicMovie Review: AMAZING MAN Summary: 5 Stars
AMAZING MAN, Amazing life...Very up-beat talented person who was somewhat un-sung behind the scenes hero...Worked with the best of the best and was an inspiration to their talents...I had seen his name listed in album credits over the years...But, I had no idea the magnatude of influence he had on the recording industry...I totally enjoyed this documentry and highly recomend it for all intrested in recording history and processes....J.D.
Movie Review: The man behind the scenes Summary: 5 Stars
I caught part of this on cable and had to have it. Tom Dowd was around, and part of some of the most important recording's in music history! Jazz, Pop, R&B, soul, and rock.
I never realized how important Tom (and others like him) are to the success of the final product. Sad to say it is an era long gone, that type of music (including rock) is not around like it was, but thanks to Tom we can enjoy it forever!!
Movie Review: Tom Dowd and the Language of Music - very interesting and well done Summary: 5 Stars
This DVD contains a great collection of pictures and some video from recording in the early 50s through the 80s. Interviews, while sometime frivolous in content, are interesting because of who the interviewees are and how they are played against each other. In general the historical content is handled well, and Tom Dowd, a talent that will be missed, is shown in a truthful yet endearing manner. Loved it!
Movie Review: Wow! What an amazing human being. Summary: 5 Stars
Ok, not only a top-flight sound engineer, world-class music-producer, dear friend and colleague of Ray Charles, but a nuclear physicist and member of the Manhattan Project as well? One couldn't possibly make up a man like Tom Dowd and this DVD tells his story beautifully, with all the compassion and respect that this great man deserves. It is truly a joy to watch, and is a must for anyone who loves music.
Movie Review: The record business in detail Summary: 5 Stars
I had the pleasure of working with and for Tom some years ago. The producers' account of the record business is accurate, but somewhat glorified. Tommy worked very well with the Ertegun brothers, and well as Herb Abramson, and was a contributor to their success.
I recommend this DVD to anyone interested in learning about the record business, even though the down and dirty isn't discussed.
