Movie Reviews of Tom Dowd & the Language of Music

Movie Review: An artist with a different talent.
Summary: 5 Stars

I wasn't familiar with Tom Dowd except as a credit or a footnote. It finally hit me that I was seeing his name on a lot of projects (particularly for Atlantic Records) and out of curiousity started searching for information about Dowd. I was pleased to come across this DVD. It really shows a man who had a gift; maybe not a musical gift, per se, but one that enabled him to make singers/musicians sound their best. I was sorry to learn that he passed away not long after the release of this project. Very good documentary.

Movie Review: Music history for music lovers
Summary: 5 Stars

After seeing this on the Sundance channel I had to buy it. I LOVE music and I didn't know who Tom Dowd was. This story has famous musicians relating how important Tom Dowd was in the creation of famous songs like Layla. Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, Dickie Betts, and Greg Alman all discuss their relationship with Tom and how influential he was to the music industry. If you like Jazz, Rock, or Soul, you will love this video.
If you are like me, you will enjoy turning your friends on to this must see video.

Movie Review: Inspiration
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this. I'm a fan of a lot of the musicians and bands featured in this movie so that makes me a little biased. That aside Tom Dowd as portrayed in this film is a wonderful, truthful and inspirational person. He produced and engineered all kinds of music not sticking to just one genre. He seemed to excel at everything he tried. If you are interested at all in the recording process or are a fan of the allman brothers, eric clapton, ray charles, booker t. and the MGs then I reccomend this movie.

Movie Review: Important Popular Music History
Summary: 5 Stars

Exuburance and innovation, the hallmark of post war America is documented here as it applies to the one of the unsung giants of the recording industry. The high quality of the Alantic label's important legacy owes much to Tommy Dowd. Suprising is the musical influence he enjoyed with artists such as Aretha Frankin, the Allman's, Cream and many others. This is an enormously entertaining documentary. If you enjoy listening to music, this is a must see!

Movie Review: Great documentary about a man you should hear about
Summary: 5 Stars

Tom Dowd, whether you've ever heard of him or not, influenced most of the music you enjoy. I don't care what genre of music you like, he changed the way it was recorded and produced. And, if you like any music produced from the 50s through the 70s, he made it sound the way that it did.

This documentary tells Dowd's story in his own words. It was released shortly after his death. Watching this movie will change how you look at popular music.
