Movie Reviews of Tom Dowd & the Language of Music

Movie Review: Unsung musical hero
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD should be played for all musical education across the U.S....Just to see and hear from Tom Dowd and the lives he touched inspires me everytime I watch it...and I've given this as a gift to a dozen friends and they all are amazed about this
wonderful musical man...my one major concern this man is not in the "Rock & Roll Hall of Fame"...he should have a wing named after him...other people on his video are in and he's not that's
an injustice...Mr. Dowd's passion for the artist and the sound is
unsurpassed and most likely never equaled again...join me and contact the R&R HofF..and let them know they need to induct Mr.
Tom Dowd into the hall....Bugs Davidson

Movie Review: A musical education!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this program on Ovation TV and I had to buy it for my own.
Music is a very important part of my life--it has saved me many times!
And the music on this film is some of the best--Eric Clapton, the Allmans,
etc.Tom Dowd was a genius in the control room--he worked with SO many of
the greatest musicians ever recorded. He also had a very interesting life
apart from music, but I don't want to ruin it by telling you what he was
involved in!For your own pleasure, entertainment and education, buy this
DVD.It will give you nothing but pure joy.God Rest Your Soul,Mr.Dowd.

Movie Review: Tom Dowd, The Language of Music
Summary: 5 Stars

Before this DVD I had no idea who Tom Dowd was. But if you have been a fan of any kind of popular music over the last 50 years you have been a fan of Tom Dowd. He was amazing. This DVD was amazing. If you love music, engineering, or history you will love this documentary. I now know what a sound engineer does, what a record producer does and have a deeper appreciation of the record making process. The best parts are the behind the scenes and the in-studio stories of Eric Clapton, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Lynard Skynyard and The Allman Brothers Band.

Movie Review: The genius behind the geniuses
Summary: 5 Stars

Any fan of 20th century contemporary jazz and rock will love this documentary - Tom Dowd made the genius musician sound like a genius. He would climb into a song just like the musician did and helped create some of the most enduring records of all time. For me in particular, the section where he re-visits the recording of "Layla", and he's sitting at the board and isolates just the guitars of Duane and Eric interplaying is simply spine tingling. Dowd says "Those are not human notes..." I hope you enjoy this as much as I do.

Movie Review: A joyful celebration of a good man, his life, and incredible music
Summary: 5 Stars

What a fantastic musical trip down memory lane. The list of great musicians that Tom Dowd has worked with as an engineer and producer is as long as my arm. He truly was an unsung genius as an engineer, and had a massive impact on the great music of the last half century as a producer as well. From jazz, R & B, Classic Rock, to his passing in the early years of the new millennium, he has been an integral part of the iconic sounds of each era. A fantastic and enjoyable story of a really good man, his life, and his music.
