Movie Review: Great introduction to a legend
Summary: 4 Stars

The first time I became aware of Tom Dowd was in 1968 when I got a copy of Aretha's Gold and was putting names and faces together with the pictures on the back of the record. It just seemed that the person holding it all together was Tom Dowd. As I grew older and began to play music and do a little recording, I became obsessed with the names on the back of the record. No one was there more than Tom Dowd. As I matured as a listener I began to understand that not only had dowd produced many of the record that were part of my personal soundtrack, but he was one of the creators of modern recording and that most major movements in the post war era musically had passed through his hands. Simply put the Dowd legacy was/is amazing. This makes him a great subject for a documentary.

While one can quibble with some of the methods used in telling the story, the most important voice shines through clearly-the voice of Tom Dowd. Through interviews we hear his story, see his personality, feel his passion for the music and the people he worked with. Much of the emphasis is on his work with the Allman Brothers, Skynyrd and Clapton in part because they were easily accessible, but also because they were the cornerstones of his work in rock and roll. Perhaps mor interesting are the stories about the early days of Atlantic Records. I would like to have heard more about the jazz sessions, but you can't have everything, in part because many of the artists have passed on.

If you don't want to cry when you see his joy at pushing the faders on the master tapes of Layla and emotionally being in the presence of Duane and Eric all over again, you need a soul transplant. All in all an enjoyable, informative DVD that I highly recommend.

Movie Review: Creating the Music
Summary: 4 Stars

Mark Moorman has crafted a surprisingly good documentary dedicated to the life and work of legendary music producer Tom Dowd. Relatively unknown outside the recording industry Dowd crafted some of the greatest music of the 20th Century. Combining interviews, film clips, and photographs Moorman tells Dowd's story from his years as a physicist on the Manhattan Project to his becoming the star producer at Atlantic Records and finally his production work with Clapton, Skynard, and others. The Who's Who that Dowd worked with is amazing.

In addition to the Dowd story one gets a good view of how the music gets recorded and a fair amount of the history of Atlantic Records. If there is a problem with this film it's that it doesn't present enough of the music. The highlight is watching Dowd remaster the tracks of Layla some 30 years down the road with a childlike glee that is charming.

The bonus material is equally interesting as almost another 90 minutes of interview footage with artists, fellow producers and family members. This is a worthwhile viewing experience for anyone interested in Dowd, early recordins or music in general. Do yourself a favor and see it.

Movie Review: wonderful but come on Tom
Summary: 4 Stars

In my younger days Tom's name appeared on mucho LP's and I always admired his work, especially Cream albums. This DVD was a must for my collection and the stories he could tell, but much was lacking as far as I'm concerned.I was dying for insider info,if anyone was an insider I would call Tom that.I was not looking for any dirty laundry but I would have loved tales of his idea's like the Indian drum beat in "sunshine of your love.We need more tribute's to the great producers and engineers like this and more intimate tales of what bands are really like in the studio.Buy this DVD and see what a wonder and talented guy Tom Dowd really was.A must for music lovers.
