Movie Reviews of TogetherMovie Review: Fantastic! Words cannot express... Summary: 5 Stars
This may very well be one of the most fabulous and wonderful movies I've ever seen. By the end of the movie you'll have filled buckets, but these are not the kind of emotionally draining tears as you'd have from, say, To Live by Zhang Yimou. This is a movie about hope, companionship, life, passion, triumph, and love. But let's not forget music. Actually, it didn't even take half a minute (honestly) of watching this movie for me to realize that it was going to blow me away. Even while the opening credits are rolling, the imagery is spectacular, and the music already has you under its spell. It's gentle, yet it has some sort of... well, "energy" to it. Chen Kaige follows through excellently, keeping this energy throughout the whole movie. Anyway, one thing is for sure. This movie is about feeling. Writing a review of this movie is futile because by the time you manipulate the English language enough to try to convey the feeling this movie leaves you with, you're left with something too confusing to decipher. So just watch this movie, and feel it.
Movie Review: An Inspirtional Story of Perserverance, Hard Work and Sacrifice Summary: 5 Stars
Together is a mind blowingly powerful story of a young poor Chinese boy prodigy who has talent and a passion for playing the violin. His father realizes that the boy has gone as far as he can in their rural Chinese setting so sends him off to the big city to study under a kind but also poor master. The bonds between father, son, and violin tutor are strong. This story has many twists and turns along the way and shows clearly the daily life of the less privileged class of Chinese people. It was an eye opening glimpse into that non-tourist part of the culture. I was spell bound after the first five minutes. I loed the movie so much I was sad to see it end. I wanted it to be a six hour mini-series it was written, directed, acted, and filmed that well. The action, drama, and subtle humor pull you through this movie like a bullet train ride. It was intensely entertaining, moving, and thought provoking. I would recommend it to all my friends, and have shared my copy with others who appreciated it immensely, even those who normally don't like subtitled movies.
Movie Review: A Film That Goes to the Soul Through a Touching Story/Music Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, I want to encourage anyone out there who loves this movie to get the SOUNDTRACk of TOGETHER. It is available, and the album is both great and moving.A friend and I went to see this film not knowing what we were getting ourselves into. By the time we left the movie, we were in awe. The story is fresh and innocent reminding the viewer of what is most important in life as a boy faces the struggle between his gift and his father. The music is powerful and actually moved me to tears (my friend, too). This will be most evident in the final scene.... This movie is subtitled but you quickly forget you are reading text (and the music proves that it is truly the universal language). When I watched the first scene of the film, the soundtrack leapt out at me. I knew this film was a quality production; I knew I would not be disappointed; i knew I MUST buy the soundtrack. The film is evenly paced and might not be exciting enough for some people. But if you are in the mood to watch a powerful story...this is one for you. Sean
Movie Review: This movie is a hidden gem. Summary: 5 Stars
UA problably chose to put this movie out in limited release with a likesize advertising budget because it's a foreign film and because the people behind and in front of the camera are mostly unknown to American audiences. And that's too bad! This is a heartwarming film! Yes, like so many Chinese films it tends toward being a tear jerker, but for the most part the performances are excellent. My wife (Chinese) and I (American) saw this film on a late afternoon in the middle of the week. Including us there were 8 people in the theatre. Again, that's a shame because this is a well-made film. If you believe in family values, responsibility to those who support and believe in you, this is a movie you should want to see. My wife is far move familiar with the China movie scene than I. She says that all people involved in this project have established reputations there. From the quality of the film, I have to agree. Whenever this film goes to DVD, I'll probably buy it.
Movie Review: Please bring some tissue... Summary: 5 Stars
Just watched the movie at Copley Place last night, but the magic of the movie is still touching me.... The story tells things of ordinary people in ordinary days...but within those tiny things, we see true beauty of devotion, companion, and love.Being a Chinese, I was so touched by this movie. My story is not so big as the boy, but the father of the movie is just like the image of my parents, who will always encourage me and be there for me...while sometimes, I just act like the boy...... The music played by the violin goes through the movie. Through the string of the violin, viewers' hearts being touched as the story going on. A must-see movie, but remember to bring some tissue...
