Movie Reviews of Todd Rundgren - Liars LiveMovie Review: 4.5 start Summary: 4 Stars
This is by far the best concert DVD from Todd to date. Most of the previous attempts were poor quality through and through and/or a cut up collection of songs from a show.
This is the real deal in terms of, I think, an entire performance from the Liars tour.
Sound quality is great---I may have to finally break down and get a sound system for the TV (but headphones sure do reveal the quality).
Only a couple of niggly things to nitpick (otherwise, it's a 5 star show):
1. As with the tour, this is really a two part DVD. Part A (Liars pseudo-gothic-cranking-hard-core-angry-jamming Todd) and Part B (philly soul Todd). Both stand on their own, but some folks might prefer (greatly) one version of TR over the other. I preferred Part A. but it's a bit much to expect him to crank like that for 2 hours!
2. Lighting. For the most part, the light show is amazing, and some of the post production special digital effects are great, but there are many times when there are great washouts.
3. There were 6 or 8 cameras, but sometimes there is too much cutting back and forth, perhaps trying to appeal to the short-video-attention-span MTV mind? And, why-o-why, can't a cinematographer focus and stay on a guitar solo for it's duration? Missing some of the great soloing (a rarity in recent tours) to cut away to a background vocal isn't necessary.
But, that's just nitpicking. If you saw this tour, you will absolutely want this DVD.
Movie Review: It's Got No Fatal Flaw Summary: 4 Stars
There is no denying that the sound on this performance is nothing short of amazing. I almost wish this had come out as a live CD instead of a DVD because the visuals, although fairly interesting, are sometimes painful to watch. What I mean by that is that Todd just doesn't look healthy anymore, he had defied his age for years but it seems to have caught up with him.
That is not to say that his voice isn't superb, it really is on this performance. I think it may just be the hair, it's time to make it all one color Todd you are almost sixty!
That notwithstanding, this is the best DVD Todd has offered up since Live in Japan and the song selection is great, its not a rehash of the old catalogue, it's fresh and a treat to listen to. The only thing I missed was Kasim handling a lead vocal on at least one song as he did in Rochester, NY (He sang a cover version of "Expressway to Your Heart")
This is a great DVD and a fine addition to your Todd collection or a great way to start it.
Movie Review: Very Good Todd concert Summary: 4 Stars
If you like Todd's Liar cd you will like this DVD. If you want to see him play a lot of guitar, this is not the dvd for that. The audio-video are good, and the backup band is very good. For many of the songs, Todd just sings. PS Stay away from "live in San Francisco" that stinks.
Movie Review: Good songs, lousy performance Summary: 1 Stars
I was a typical Todd fan when I was in my 20's. Everything he did was golden and I would not accept any criticism. I'm a little older and hopefully wiser now.
First, the Pros: The songs range from good to great. Todd always was/is a good songwriter. The band is tight.
The Cons: Todd cannot sing very well anymore. He's fine when he sings "straight". When he tries to hit the "highs" and "ooh-oohs", his voice is very weak. The screeching like a banshee in "Born to Synthesize" was cringe inducing. His guitar playing is awful. He sounds like a three year old who can only use two fingers which is all Todd uses when soloing. Awful.
I don't have the "Liars" album so I was curious to hear the songs. I turned it off before the "classics" because I didn't want to hear him butcher once great songs.
I now expect all the TR disciples to tell me that I know nothing about music. I also expect personal attacks. I'm entitled to my opinion.
