Movie Reviews of Todd Rundgren - Liars LiveMovie Review: "I Think That's A Take" Summary: 5 Stars
I was fortunate enough to attend this show recorded at The Egg Performing Arts Center in Albany, NY (6/9/04). It was really great to see Todd back in absolute top form after all these years. And his performance with fellow Liars John Ferenzik, Jesse Gress, Prairie Prince and Kasim Sulton was beyond superlatives.
The two most compelling achievements of the evening were Todd's astounding vocal delivery and his ever confident stage charisma. The guy's 56 and is still belting out voice-shredding tunes like Mammon and Liar with nearly manic ferocity. His carefully placed electric lead guitar work was also as jaw-dropping as ever. And later, singing his mellower soulful ballads like "Past" or "Feel It" a la Marvin Gaye, he demonstrated his dynamic vocal range once again and sang with an emotional depth few can equal. TR is still the consummate showman as well, dancing and bounding around the stage, all the while getting the Liars' underlying message of truth seeking across. All I can say is: TR is still "A Wizard, A True Star" that will forever defy demographic placement in the music industry.
One additional note: Todd's guitar soloing in "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" was note-for-note perfection.
Movie Review: 5 stars for: Summary: 5 Stars
Every aspect of this DVD! If you are a huge Todd fan ( me! me!) or just curious, this DVD went beyond my expectations. The musicianship is incredible, and Kasim Sultan is one of the most best kept secrets in the music world- what a completely perfect bassist he is! The unique staging and lighting... and of course, with out a doubt, Mr. R's blissfully auricle-pleasing voice, a voice that has improved ( and his voice was great before!) with time, he has a command and power that can bring the listener to his/her knees. WHY this man isn't holding top honors at what ever celebrity driven music awards show is a huge sign that our society knows nothing about artistry...
Todd is gifted to his marrow and this DVD shows it. I really enjoyed the little extras , the scene at the Japanese restaurant and the Japanese fan club party were so delightful! Todd and the band members singing and playing music with the wonderful Japanese band ( I loved the female bassist who wore her beautiful kimono) ... I felt like I was at the party!
There are scores of Todd and Utopia CDs/DVDS but this was tops with audio and video quality. Extremely recommended ( and don't forget the Liars CD... it is sublime! Get that too! )
Movie Review: The best Todd DVD ever released Summary: 5 Stars
This one is an absolute gem. I have been pretty unimpressed with TRs DVDs to date, most of them are just a rehash of the old VHS version with no bonus footage etc. Even the Live in San Fran DVD was lacking in any bonus interviews or any surprises.
Aside from having a great little bonus movie of TR in Japan, attending a function put on by his fan club, the show itself is pure gold.
I have not heard Todd in such great voice since 2nd Wind. He really nails it on this show. And its a great mix of the old and new. I certainly didn't miss Can We Still Be Freinds and I Saw The Light. Todd is so over singing those songs that he tends to change them beyong recognition anyway.
I do wonder how much of the band track is being played by the musos and how much is coming of computer/dat/mini-disc etc....but most bands do that these days.
The biggest shame for me is that "Afterlife" from liars was not included. One of the great songs of Todds career in my opinion.
Plus, TR looks great - quite the pop star still, even in his 50s.
Movie Review: This is Todd and band at their BEST!! Summary: 5 Stars
From the opening synthesizer notes, lush background pad, and hazy electric blue lights/filter, I got the feeling of being thrust into the future a couple of hundred years! Very futuristic looking and sounding. The concert takes placed in an intimate setting at The Egg in Albany, New York. I would prefer a smaller venue than a huge arena concert anyway. This DVD is EXCELLENT. I LOVE all the songs included in this performance. The COSTUMES are stage setup are wild and excellently done (especially the glasses that Todd wears on the first song, "Truth"). The musicianship is superb, and TODD is a genious when it comes to songwriting, his musicianship, and music production. I understand he now resides in Hawaii and composes all his material in his home studio. Wish I were in that "predicament", lol! Anyway, you won't regret purchasing this DVD, it is truly another musical masterpiece by Todd. Buy it!
Movie Review: Todd Tells The Truth! Summary: 5 Stars
Definately buy this DVD. It is worth every penny. Todd delivers his best and most energetic performance in many years. Not only that, he covers the topic of truth and lies in our society and within ourselves and our relationships from top to bottom. His lyrics (and music) are pure genius. Too bad most people don't even care about quality music of this type. To me it is as vital as eating or breathing. Great show. A Funny blues version of "Born To Synthesize" was a nice surprise (kind of ironic in and of itself) to lighten things up. When I saw Todd do this show at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater Florida May 2004 I was finally back in Utopia with my old buddy. Now I can relive the same tour over again with this DVD. Thanks Todd! What! Still no induction into the rock and roll hall of fame?!!! OOOOOPs Wrong Planet!
