Movie Review: Todd is one of the true giants of music in the twentieth century...
Summary: 5 Stars
The bottom line of the video release of "Liars Live" is two-fold. Equally as important as his songwriting, Todd Rundgren is and always will be a great soloist on the electric guitar. His brilliance as the singer/songwriter is unparalleled to this day. While Todd continues to produce, engineer, write, and perform his exceptional solo concepts, he appears to advance his status as a cultural icon without preaching (ad nauseum) his political opinions as do many pop culture figures. Todd appears to recognize that in order to avoid becoming a parody of his former self, he must reinvent himself. The universal aspect to his writing is the key to his legacy. It should facilitate his image as a historical force in twentieth century music. The ideas that TR emotes in his songs will not drag him down to the Springsteen level of preaching about the trendy issue of the day. In all likelihood, Todd won't inflict a Michele Gray solo career on the hoi polloi as Springsteen has done, either. Applying the title track of this work toward the political climate of the day, there is no reason the video "Liars Live" would cause the liberal or conservative listener to put aside his or her personal convictions in order to appreciate Todd's superior work. Each song captured on this video reminds the listener of Todd's qualities as a timeless genius. A standout performance included on this DVD, originally recorded on the 1968 double album entitled "The Beetles" (known as the "White" album), is the remake of the classic tune, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". New live renditions of Todd classics such as "Hello, It's Me" and "Just One Victory" can also be found. Another notable selection included in this set "Born to Synthesize". Notably, the costuming and set design is an outstanding addition to the visual aspects of this show, thanks to Todd's drummer Charles L'Empereur Prince. As it is with a majority of Todd's projects, Kasim Sulton on bass is the standout musician among the supporting cast. In conclusion, the time for Todd to depart on his next adventure cannot begin soon enough.
