Movie Review: Sad and noble, and full of hope

To Live is the best Chinese film I have ever seen. It gives a wonderful view of modern Chinese history, with as honest a perspective as can be hoped for. It is honest about the hard times the Chinese have faced in recent years, but without the bitterness one often finds in narratives of this period of Chinese history. The sadness of the film was wonderfully portrayed -- strangely sad and hopeful. This is a film that invites multiple viewings. Movie Review: One of Gong Li's Best

I must admit, I didn't expect too much from this movie when I bought it, despite the good reviews. To me, the movie starts off rather slow as well (and kind of comedic) with the centerpiece of the story being the gambling.
It doesn't take long for the story to really take shape and unfold into one of the best movies I have ever seen. Gong Li is amazing.
You won't regret buying this.

I recently married a lady from China and bought this movie partially out of my new interest in China. I was not prepared for the emotional impact it had. Portrayed as a story of a family going through the communist revolution, it really is a story of the love of a wife and mother for her family and how she stayed the course; and also of a man who finally grew up. This truly is a must own for anybody. I bought mine from a seller.The story of two peoples lives. Husband gambles,loses everything,wife still loves him. See how their lives overcome this and suffer the ups and downs of life. It felt like the viewer became part of their lives,the sad and happy. It's truly a gripping film. Don't miss this. It's one of the best I ever saw. 10 stars!!!!
