Movie Reviews of To Live

Movie Review: Zhang Yimou and Gong Li Creat Another Masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Zhang Yimou is one of the greatest directors of the past decade. Add to this China's greatest film actress Gong Li. The two always combine to make great films and this is their masterpiece.

Gong Li and Ge You star as husband and wife who are very successful performers. But life changes for them during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960's.

This is a great examination of this period of China's history. If you want to understand this period this is the film give you a backdrop of what happened.

By far, this was the best picture released in 1994 and Gong Li gave the best performance of the year.

Movie Review: One of the best from the director of Raise the Red Lantern
Summary: 5 Stars

As a film, it is visually beautiful, equipped with a strong and coherent plot, and clearly supported by excellent casting. More interestingly for me, the film would work in a history classroom environment, because it does cover the a period that spans from post war repulican China, through civil war, to the Cultural Revolution and beyond. The fact that it misses out on certain sensitive historical issues in Chinese history (e.g. the famine that preceded the Cultural Revolution) actually serves as an opportunity for a class discussion on the dynamics of censorship on filmmaking.

I cannot recommend this film highly enough.

Movie Review: To Live and to Teach
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this film when it first came out and again recently. It is a sweeping, yet personal representation of the suffering of the chinese people during the second half of the 20c. Though the film maker needed to disguise the horror of many episodes in the lives of his characters behind humor or overly gentle portrayal, it does not take much to see past this to the real messages of the film. I watched the film with my 7th grade class. They were deeply moved and were given images to attach to abstract historical periods. They loved it. I highly recommend this film to all viewers over the age of 10.

Movie Review: 6 Stars +
Summary: 5 Stars

To Live is a masterful project and deserves the best praises for foreign cinema. It touches every emotion possible in its depiction of one family's faults and successes; life as it might have been in the midst of political chaos. To Live maps the losses and gains of Fugui and Jiazhen--an average young couple moving through China. It's difficult to discuss the turns and movement without spoiling the movie. However, I will say the couple we encounter in the 1940s and end with in the 1960s is triumphant and tells a story never to be forgotten. Highly Recommended!!!!!!

Movie Review: To Experience
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first saw this film, I was so absorbed that I was disappointed when the end credits began to roll. The Chinese couple had become my family and I wanted to stay around -- despite the horrid circumstances they suffered during the Communist revolution.

It surprised me when I finally realized that my adored Gong Li wasn't the real star of the movie, but rather Ge You, the comical but talented actor who played her husband. It didn't matter. Neither did the nitpicky flaws of the movie. TO LIVE was to experience. That's what I go to a movie for.
