Movie Reviews of Titanic

Movie Review: "propaganda"
Summary: 4 Stars

Although WW 2 was a just war without any doubt and I'm very happy that the allied forces won I must admitt that I'm a bit surprised about the fact that 60 years after the war people still can't get over their prejudices and look at the facts..Every time a german film from the war years is reviewed it begins with" propaganda" etc etc...well, almost ANY american or english film made during those years is as much a propaganda film, yet I never see that label apllied to it . It was always thus : the loosers made 'vile propaganda" while the winners made "heroic moral boosters" :-))....maybe its time we view these films a bit more dispassionedly..Napoleon was a brutish killer too and a conquering dictator whose armies killed millions yet he's been cuddled and agrandised at nauseam in scores of films...does time really heals everything after all then, or are we just selective with our memories ?

Movie Review: Crazy propaganda! A must-have for history buffs.
Summary: 4 Stars

This strange film has an incredible history and is mesmerizing for those interested in wartime propaganda... in this strange version of the TITANIC tragedy, a lone German officer stands against the evil British empire who condemns the passengers to a watery grave because of their national lust for power and profit. Wait til you get a load of the Oompah orchestra on deck playing a march to cheer the doomed passengers!

The special features, especially the tour of the sister ship OLYMPIC, are also interesting.

Kino always puts great care into the passion of film preservation.

Movie Review: Fascinating Look at the Titanic Disaster
Summary: 4 Stars

Once you get past the Nazi propaganda and anti-British sentiments, this 1943 German production of the Titanic tragedy emerges as a fascinating cinematic document. Despite its troubled shoot, the final results are surprisingly compelling, with a good cast and impressive visuals. Running 85 minutes, the German version is preferable to director James Cameron's overblown 1997 epic. The Kino DVD includes an excellent 35mm print and terrific extras. Definitely worth seeing.

Movie Review: a different point of view
Summary: 3 Stars

The wartime german 'Titanic' epic has an obvious bias, but still manages to catch the context of this famous disaster, and has a few moments of genuine drama (and quite a few of pure melodrama). The special effects are quite good for the period. Criticism of the British shipowners is key point (though in fact the Titanic's owners were ultimately the American Mercantile marine co.). And the band does play "nearer my god to thee" which is almost essential for a Tianic movie, even if the historical basis for this is doubtful. Worth viewing if only as a historical movie curiosity.

Movie Review: Titanic
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this movie out of curosity. It is full of propaganda, and not at all factual in terms of the Titanic, but interesting considering it was done during the war. Not released by the Germans due to the violence of the sinking. Odd considering the death camps etc.. An interesting movie, and as we are learning German, worth the cost.
