Summary: 4 Stars

On a whim, I decided to pick up this movie, and I'm so very glad that I did! TIME AFTER TIME (1979) combines romance and thriller aspects into a fascinating time-travel story; and stars Malcolm McDowell as H.G. Wells, the author who invents a time machine but is completely unprepared for the incredible journey that it will take him on...

H.G. Wells travels into the future to bring to justice the notorious serial killer Jack the Ripper (David Warner) after he uses the time machine to evade the authorities in Victorian-era London. Mortified that he's allowed such a destructive force loose on what he's convinced is a peaceful new "utopian" world society, Wells is soon disillusioned when, once in modern day San Francisco, he discovers there's more crime and uncertainty than ever before, and it seems that the Ripper has found the ideal second home in which to resume his murder spree. Befriended by lovely bank clerk Amy Robbins (Mary Steenburgen), Wells is soon hot on the trail of the Ripper, but there's also time to discover things like McDonald's, telephones, traffic lights, cars...and romance...

Malcolm McDowell brings an appealing "little boy lost" quality to the role of Wells and is very endearing (this was his first project after the notorious "Caligula"--what a contrast!). TIME AFTER TIME is also where McDowell and Steenburgen met for the very first time and they subsequently enjoyed a ten-year marriage. David Warner (in probably one of his best movie roles) is chilling as Jack the Ripper, putting a human face to an horrific character that is still largely swathed in mystery and confusion. Ms Steenburgen--in only her second major film--is a delightful presence as the street-smart yet incredibly vulnerable woman who gets caught up in the plot.

I guarantee you'll enjoy your time-twisting adventures with McDowell and Steenburgen in the underrated classic, TIME AFTER TIME! Recommended.
