Movie Reviews of Time After Time

Movie Review: Great gem of a movie & Excellent anamorphic widescreen transfer to DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

This 1979 movie is a real gem--it has something for every taste--thriller--science fiction--murder mystery--romance--a little comedy--victorian London--modern-day San Francisco (well, 1979). Excellent casting, great performances by all involved--attention to historical detail. My review is based on the Sept. 2, 2008 DVD edition.

The transfer to DVD is quite impressive--in particular for a relatively old film and for one that was not considered to be remastered. Its anamorphic widescreen transfer to DVD looks as good as most new films in my collection--almost as good as my HD DVDs. Great colors, sharp, clean picture, and excellent sound. The image has been enhanced for 16x9 aspect ratio, large screen, high-defintion TVs, so the image fills the entire screen. I have not seen any previous DVD edition of this movie, so I cannot comment on any possible upgrade in this latest, 2008 transfer.

This is the type of movie you will watch again and again, so it is a worthwhile addition to your DVD collection. Highly recommended!

Movie Review: Time After Time
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie isn't just a "chic flick" but science fiction based upon H.G. Wells book. The main character - H.G. Wells - portrayed by Malcomb McDowell creates a time machine. His friend unbeknownst to him, is Jack the Ripper, portrayed by David Warner, who steals Wells' time machine to go forward into 20th century San Francisco. Wells follows Jack, meets a foreign money exchange officer at a bank portrayed by Mary Steenburgen. And the adventure is on. Suffice it to say, Jack gets what he deserves in the end in an unexpected way, Malcomb McDowell and Mary Steenburgen's characters fall in love and the ending may be predictable, but the footnote at the end of the movie may be a bit of a surprise. The acting is excellent, the movie enjoyable without sex scenes and "shoot 'em up gunfire" yet the anticipation as McDowell and Steenburgen chase Warner is fun to watch. Enjoy this classic.

Movie Review: A Timeless Treat!
Summary: 5 Stars

Nicholas Meyer is a wonderful writer! He was also the creator of THE SEVEN PERCENT SOLUTION (another favorite of mine), and TIME AFTER TIME is a delicious follow-up. The story is clever and funny and touching and suspenseful, and the cast is splendid (One can watch Steenburgen and McDowell falling in love as they make the film (They were later married). And David Warner makes a superb Jack the Ripper (and gets the lion's share of the best lines: "Ninety years ago I was a freak. Today I'm an amateur.") There's also a luscious musical score by Miklos Rozsa (Listen to the little tune playing in the background at the revolving restaurant!). On a recent visit to San Francisco I found myself stumbling on settings from the movie (Francisco Street, The Palace of Fine Arts, The Hyatt Regency, the Muir Woods), and they inevitably brought back happy memories of this charming movie.

Movie Review: Classic scifi and intelligent and fun.
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie has it all. A very imaginative plot and great premise with actors perfectly cast and you believe they really are these people. Very witty script and many fun suprises. You will want to watch it many times because there are so many funny lines and sequences to enjoy. The 1979 clothes and hair styles are also fun to watch. Malcom and Mary are so perfect I dont think anyone else could've played these parts. Even though parts of the story are hard to believe you do believe it because of them. Even the strange ending is fun and touching and makes you wish there was a sequel so you could find out what happens to these characters later. I wont spoil the ending but I wish I knew what happened to them after they got to where they were going when the movie ended.

Movie Review: Still lovely after 30 years....
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw "Time after Time" when it was released in 1979, and it's probably been 20 years since I saw it last. To my great delight, it still works, with its three strong leads and deft attention to detail. We see 1979 San Francisco through the eyes of time traveler H.G. Welles, bizarre headlines, plastic jeans, "that Scottish restaurant" and all. Once again, I found it positively scary how easily David Warner's Jack the Ripper slipped into the late 1970s, and how deliciously the sparks fly between Malcolm MacDowell and Mary Steenburgen. Haven't watched it with the commentary yet. That should be fun.
