Movie Reviews of Thundercats - Season One, Volume OneMovie Review: Thundercats HO!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Well it finally happened, thank the Lords of Thundera! I've been wanting these cartoons on DVD for years, and actually considered getting them from Empirical Films dot com....I'm glad I waited. I'm not sure how good the quality of their DVDs is, but these official DVDs are of A-1 top quality in my opinion.
In fact the quality of the DVDs is fantastic, as good as first aired, if not better. Amazingly well preserved, and although the box mentions nothing of the episodes having been remastered I suspect that they were. The Thundercats is the best cartoon I've ever seen. They actually killed characters on the air! Jaga for one, in Exodus who sacrificed his life so that the others would make it to Third Earth. And the original Beserkers for two, who were drowned by the Thundertank piloted by Panthro. Later Hammerhand was raised by Mumm-Ra and his soul placed inside the clone of Panthro....ironic isn't it? This caused a bit of dissention in TV land, several "concerned" parents raised a campaign to have the shows offed, but instead all cartoons placed 30 second "morality PSAs" at the end of each episode. Remember "Now you know, and knowing is half the battle" from GI-Joe? Well now you know why, and knowing is....anyway I'm getting off subject here.
To date my favorite single episode is "Mongor". In this episode Mumm-Ra realizes that, "The power of the Thundercats is greater than I imagined, greater than anything I have overcome before".
All 33 episodes in this first installment set the stage for the battles to come, and one can see how the animators, and writers improve the characters, the scenery, and the plots for each successive episode. I can hardly wait for my favorite multi-part episode, "Thundercats Ho!" where the kids Wilykat, and Kit kill the Berserkers AGAIN! Alas that will be in Season 2 Volume 1. In Season 1 Volume 2 you can look forward to Lion-O's Trials, where he must overcome his friends, and Mumm-Ra in order to be appointed the TRUE Lord of the Thundercats. This is also a great set of episodes, but won't be out until December, I think I can wait that long, after all it's been more than 20 years! Exodus (the Pilot) was aired January 23rd of 1985, it is now August 2005, so it's been 20 years, 7 months and an odd number of days. This cartoon is so well thought out, and put together, that to date NO OTHER cartoon, or series, has even come close. The animation for the time was superb, the plots, and storylines were almost too adult for anyone under the age of 8, and it remains a timeless mythos that rivals that of Tolkien! I am extremely excited about finally getting all 130 episodes on DVD, I've forgotten half of them, and there are others still that I have never seen. Below is a list of the characters that I can recall at this time, mind you that not all of them are listed, and some will not be introduced until Season 2. Enjoy.
