Movie Reviews of Thunderbirds (Widescreen Edition)

Movie Review: Very enjoyable. Nice, fun and exciting.
Summary: 4 Stars

I just went and saw this with my ten year old boy. I wasn't a fan of the TV serial since I don't go in for marionettes but this film was very good.

The basic story is about the youngest son who wants to join in on the family business of rescuing people. He and his two closest friends get their chance when the Father and 4 older brothers are attacked by a super villain known as 'The Hood' (Ben Kingsley) and need rescuing themselves.

I liked this movie. It had a few lessons to teach about earning your way (no shortcuts) and being loyal. The only parts that disappointed me were a couple of "man-bashing" references during the film that seemed petty and inappropriate. Is anybody else fed up with that kind of stuff?

Overall though, I give this a big thumbs up as a family film that had excitement, adventure and even some good laughs. Take your kids, I think you'll all like it.

Recommended.

Movie Review: I -HAVE- seen the movie and it's surprisingly good!
Summary: 4 Stars

I had the chance to see the movie in a pre-premier showing and it was surprisingly good. Being a fan of the original series in particular and the genre in general I half-dreaded the movie expecting a bucket of childish dreck. Boy was I extremely and pleasantly surprised! The acting and effects are very convincing and the gadgets live up to the original series quite well. The production company scored a major coup in getting Bill Paxton, Anthony Edwards, and Ben Kingsley (as the Hood) as well as getting Jonathan Frakes to direct. If you haven't seen the movie, don't carp on it. (How can you review it and not see it???? Get a grip!). This movie isn't for everyone but should appeal to fans and non-fans alike. Hopefully it will rekindle the popularity the series enjoyed 35 years ago. Could "Captain Scarlet: The Movie" be far behind? (It's not...!)

Movie Review: Great movie for kids
Summary: 4 Stars

We are fans of the original Thunderbirds series. We went to the movie with our children and were not disappointed. It was really very entertaining and exiciting. Our kids thought it was fantastic! All they wanted to do is play Thunderbirds for the next week. The movie is not some work of art and the middle of the show depicts teenagers coming of age-not award winning writing here. What it does have going for it is some good rescues, good digital effects, no guns fired at anyone, strong female characters that can kick some butt, good updates to the super rescue machines, and one scene with a hand reaching for a throttle control with wires clearly visible. Despite all this die hard original Thunderbirds fans may not may still complain-missing the cheesy supermarionation(?sp) effects. You must see this with kids 5-12 years old.

Movie Review: Really fun family movie
Summary: 4 Stars

We've introduced our boys to the original Thunderbirds and they were SOOOO excited while watching this movie!

I was wary, given the less-than-stellar reviews it received, but I thought this film was really nicely done. Tribute is paid to all the original elements (the way the craft launch, Parker and Penelope) and there are a couple of moments of subtle naughty humour for the adults (but really subtle, not like most animated movies we've seen recently...ack!).

I've read complaints that say the plot is thin. Well, it has to be straightforward, so that they can fit in all the fun stuff and not make it seem clunky. It's not Stanley Kubrick, people!

Delightful, family-friendly, great-looking movie. (And no kissing, so good good for those with boys!) Well done Frakes and team.

Movie Review: imaginative fun for the kid in everyone
Summary: 4 Stars

Disneyworld, with it's plastic, overtly sickly sweet interpretation of fun is the vacation of choice for families wanting to vacation in a place where dreams become reality. Thunderbirds approches the kid's adventure genre with the same great spirit that embodies Disneyworld as a vacation mecca. Terriffic is the scope of the movie, with it's frenetic pacing and visual energy, any fan of a true action movie will find plenty to cheer about. With a cardboard cutout version of everything a fantasy villlain should be, Ben Kingsley fills his role perfectly. and the rockets and gadgetry will amaze even hardened James Bond Fans. This movie is just plain fun. my only complaint: its too short. The Director (Jonathan Frakes of Star Trek The Next Generation) should have made it a bit longer. 4.5 stars
