Movie Reviews of Thunderbirds (Widescreen Edition)

Movie Review: wow, that was - actually - OK to Pretty Good!
Summary: 4 Stars

Amazingly enough - Thunderbirds was actually a pretty good movie.

I mean, it was all too easy for the good guys, of course, and you really haveta ignore the whole "where did he GET all those cool toys!" thing, but as movie ripoffs of TV shows go (hey, why didn't the andersons get any credit??) it was pretty good.

My 5 yr old, who made me take him home in the middle of the 2nd Scoobydoo movie, liked it alot, and altho there're some situations that flirt with going over the "adult/child" edge, they just flirt at flirting, so no big deal there.

All in all - I'd have to say if you liked the TV series, you'll probably like the movie, and if you've got any youngish children (I'd say 8-12, but like I said, my 5 yr old liked it alot) it'd be a good movie to take them to see.

One kind of weird thing I noticed - because it's live-action and not puppets (like the TV series) you really get a sense of how BIG the Thunderbird vehicles are - and that's a direct tribute to the sfx guys - good job!

Oh - if there isn't atleast a direct-to-video sequel or live action TV show in the making, I'll gladly go see the next Star Trek movie and LIKE it (gettin' my dig in on Jonathan Frakes who directed this movie and the most recent STNG movie, which stank).

Movie Review: Fun for all the family
Summary: 4 Stars

The makers of this film have done pretty well at turning a puppet show into a live action movie. The human actors do not, on the whole, much resemble the puppets characters on which they are based (Jeff Tracy, in particular, doesn't look nearly old enough to be the father of four grown-up sons), but it doesn't matter. Tracy Island has been brought to life beautifuly, and the glorious South Pacific location makes you long to be there, and the special effects are fantastic.

To make the film appealing for children, Alan and Tintin have been made much younger than they are in the TV version, and there are, rather confusingly, two Brains, a father and son. When the Hood (Ben Kingsley, clearly having a great time) arrives to take over the island, the adult Thunderbirds are all captures and it is up to the younger generation to save the day.
They are aided by an incredibly luscious Lady Penelope, and the stalwart Parker.

If the story doesn't grip you it really doesnt' matter, you can luxuriate in the wonderful pacific setting, marvel at the special effects, and if your fancy inclines that way, drool over the delectable Lady Penelope. Don't worry about faithfulness to the original, just enjoy it for what it is, a simple dose of fun.

Movie Review: A excellent film-but only if you've never watched the tv sho
Summary: 4 Stars

Thunderbirds has been harshly critised, and fair enough it is nothing on the television show but the point is it isn't meant to be like the television show. Its more aimed at being a light, children's film and so it focuses rather more on the youngest Tracy and his friends rather than the adults.

I think the actors did a great job with what they were given. Bill Paxton gave a good performance as Jeff Tracy. It is a shame the eldest four sons were pushed into smaller parts but then Brady Sorbet who plays Alan does do a good job most of the time as the film focuses on him.

The stars of the show were undoubtedly Sophie Myles and Ron Cook portraying Lady Penelope and Parker. Both give perfect performances and really do they characters credit.
Sadly a lot of the critism is warrented, however, adults who loved the original versions should note this film si more intended for the younger generation who never saw the television show.

All around, i think this film is good family fun, and enjoyable as long as you aren't devoted to the original version of thunders.I enjoyed the film thoroughly and i noted all the children in the cinema also did.

Movie Review: A Long wait
Summary: 4 Stars

As soon as I heard that they were making Thunderbirds into a live action movie I was totally excited. It has only opened yesterday in New Zealand, and I dragged my partner along to see it. Im not going to go into the plot etc. because so many other reviewers have.
I think as a stand alone movie it was great, relating it back to the original Thunderbirds, well it was still good. I have always been a fan of the Gerry & Sylvia Anderson TV series, and also like what Jonathan Frakes has done.

I liked the little tribbutes to the original thunderbirds, there is one scene when Alan is in Thunderbird one with fermet(sp) and they are about to launch and go to london, and you can see strings on one of the hands, quite cool.

It is unfortunate that the likes of spykids etc have come out since this project was started as I think it would have lead the way as opposed to now falling into the same catagorie.

Lady P was awesome and Bill Paxton did a good job.

Lastly im 38 and I still really enjoyed the movie and look forward to the DVD comming available.

Go see it if you can.

Movie Review: 5...4...3...2...1...Thunderbirds are Go!
Summary: 4 Stars

Being a fan of the original Thunderbirds show, I am still having trouble getting use to this new live action movie. The movie itself is okay, though I would have liked seeing more of the Thunderbird craft themselve and the other Tracy boys. I think I'm finally being able to tell the difference between Scott and Virgil. There are several things that are uncomfortably different from the original show, but I have come to consider the new movie as being in an alternate universe to the original show.

Before the DVD came out I thought it would have cool menus and stuff, but once I got it I found out that it had drab menus and that it was only the UK version I've been hearing about. I have also had trouble accessing the DVD-ROM features (Though that might just be due to the fact that this was the first time I tried looking at a DVD-ROM section).

Overall, I think the movie was good, but I would have bought the UK version instead if I knew what the US version was like and if my DVD player would play it, in which it wouldn't.
