Movie Reviews of Thunderbirds (Widescreen Edition)

Movie Review: F. A. B. Thunderbirds!
Summary: 5 Stars

in the 1960's, Gerry Anderson, using SuperMarionation, created the Thunderbirds: an international rescue group which used spaceships & other 'cool' machines to rescue people from disasters, natural & other, at the turn of the 21st century. Director Jonathan Frakes clearly loved the series ... hence this delightful 'kid's film' which is truly for all ages.

In this tale of the rescuing Tracy family [led by Bill Paxton, clearly enjoying his chance to play the stoic head of the family], there is an addition to the '60's -Thunderbirds-, a juvenile Tracy named Alan who desperately wants to be a Thunderbird. Intervention from The Hood [Ben Kingsley], a villain 'created' by Mr. Tracy [does *every1* create their own villains?], gives Alan the desperation needed ... & the chace to become a hero. The addition of Alan's friends Tintin & Fermat [son of Brain, another character from the series, here delightfuly stuttered by Anthony Edwards] add to the enjoyment: sidekicks whose abities make them more than mere window-dressing.

There are several obvious 'additions' to 'modernize' the 'future', the main 1 being the London monorail [wasn't 1 there in 2003!]. And Lady Penelope, a gorgeous blonde super-heroine who aids the T-birds, is defty created [again, she was in the original series] as a semi-romantic interest for Paxton's character but *not* Alan's mother ... she's sadly long dead.

Everything from the old series is here, from the rescue vessels to the island to the old theme song. Deftly written w/tongues firmly planted in cheek, the movie soars when needed, plummets when dives are called for, & in general re-creates -Thunderbirds- quite well.

Movie Review: Brilliant movie version of a great kids TV show!
Summary: 5 Stars

At last, the live action THUNDERBRIDS hit the big screen in the UK this weekend, and myself and my wife Sarah were among the first to see it. We were surprised that it was way better than we thought, and indeed, captured the corniness(if that's the right word) and tongue-in-cheek spirit of the TV series which we remember fondly from childhood. Though this film version owes more to SPY KIDS and CODY BANKS with the main Tracey family sons as teens, and there's nothing wrong with that. The story involves evil genius The Hood(BEN KINGSLEY!) taking over Tracey Island - International Rescue and the Thunderbirds' secret island base - in order to hijack the Thunderbird aircraft to rob the world's banks. Unfortunately, astronaut father Jeff Tracey and his elder sons are trapped on Thunderbird 5, the space station that receives distress calls for IR to answer when The Hood fires a missile from his sub(!!). So it is up to younger son Alan Tracey, Tintin and others, including London agent Lady Penelope(Sophia Myles, watch out more for her in the future!) and trusty chauffeur PArker to save the day. The real stars here though are the action and SFX scenes, particularly when The Hood causes a bit of havoc in London by the Thames. Lots of fun for adults and great for the children to enjoy as well; and what a change it makes to see a family movie in which a family pulls together and solves their troubles as a team to get out of sticky situations instead of arguing dysfunctionally as is the case with most so-called family movies. Hey, just forget the negative reviews from certain websites and certain critics and enjoy the movie. A must see.

Movie Review: Thunderbirds and Busted, what more could a kid want?
Summary: 5 Stars

Being from England, we've had "Busted" around for a few years now. I first heard them (I think) as background music on a Snowboarding show, and was hooked straight away.
My autistic 11 year old son, and 40 year old hubby are hooked too.
They're probably gonna be offended by this description, but they're like the Beatles meets U2 from the 80s... or at leat some of them are. Busted's 1st UK Album, "Busted" is absolutely amazing, and I wasn't let down when they released "A Present For Everyone"
As for the film... truly awesome. Even my 4 year old sat trough it at the movies and was captivated.
We enjoyed the whole TBirds/Busted thang so much we went to see them at MEN Arena a couple of weeks back. Robert (the 11 year old) was a bit confused about what was happening, but once he got in to it, he found it the most enlightening experience he's ever had, and one of the band even seemed like they were trying to make him smile (Obviously he didn't know Robert's autistic and won't smile at strangers).
In short - Buy the movie, buy the Busted CDs - support the greatest band to have come out of the UK in decades.

Movie Review: FAB summer movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This Thunderbirds tv show prequel manages to fit all 5 Thunderbird vehicles into the rescues in a believable manner and they looked fantastic. Especially the weighty feeling when Thunderbird 2 is on screen, you really get a sense of how massive it is.

The movie changes make complete sense if you're familiar with the classic series. Costumes are fit, Thunderbird 4 looks more like a real submersible than an SUV, and FAB 1 is able fly as it should be able to do.

Fabulous preformances by Sohia Myles and Ron Cook, the kids play off each other well, Bill Paxton brings an effortlessly conflicted and heroic Jeff Tracy on screen. Sir Ben Kingsley's Hood is campy and intense in the right places.

If you don't mind Ford signs, young Tracy boys still maturing, Fermat, funny accents and lame henchmen, this is an enjoyable hour and half kid friendly, moral, attractive movie experience.

If they don't make a sequel, the classic TV show is required watching. If you're older and missed the marionettes, watch Team Ameria: World Police in theatres soon.

Movie Review: Great summer movie for the kids
Summary: 5 Stars

Inspired by the 1960's BBC series of the same name, this film stars several well known actors: Bill Paxton (Apollo 13) as Jeff Tracy, Sir Ben Kingsley (Gandhi, Schindler's List) as "The Hood", and Anthony Edwards (TV's ER, Top Gun) as the Thunderbirds' stuttering gadget guru, Brains. Relative unknown Sophia Myles puts on a charming performance as the only female Thunderbird, Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward. The film is directed by Jonathan Frakes (Star Trek: The Next Generation) whose other directing credits include the Star Trek movies First Contact and Insurrection.

This film covers ground already well tread in the realm of summer movies for kids: three adolescents take on adult roles to save International Rescue, and thwart the evil plans of The Hood; but it does so in a delightfully campy comic book way.

Anyone over the age of ten may find this film a bit of a yawner, but for a younger audience, this movie is nothing short of good summer fun.
