Movie Reviews of Three O'Clock High

Movie Review: FINALLY OUT ON DVD!
Summary: 5 Stars

If I was ever going to be marooned on a deserted isle (with electical power, of course) there are three comedy movies I would want with me: The Odd Couple, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, and Three O'Clock High. For the longest time I was going to have to make due with just the first two since Three O'Clock High went out of print years ago. I almost forked over an insane amount of money when I saw a 5th generation copy of a rental store video selling on a popular auction site, but it just wasn't worth it to me. I am glad I waited, because someone with more than two brain cells to rub together took the initiative and released this hilarious and fast-paced comedy for both older fans and a whole new audience. Not as teen-sophisticated as "Sixteen Candles" or "Pretty in Pink", and not as gnarly and racy as "Fast Times at Ridgemont High", this high school comedy film has a lot going for it in its own right. It even has an early appearance of Mitch Pileggi (X-Files' "Skinner") as "The Duke-ster" - playing a HILARIOUS truant officer. The only downfall is the very heavily soaked '80's musical soundtrack, but this is it. If you can still stomach the likes of Tangerine Dream with their 'keytars' drum machines, and synth samplers, then you are in for a really fun 90 minutes. The transfer to DVD is bright and clear, and the cover still has the original theatrical artwork.

Movie Review: Entertaining Nostalgia!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had seen this movie for the first time many years ago on television actually, well after it's release. Before then, I had never even heard of it. What a pleasant, humorous surprise it was. Anyone who had attended High School in the 80's or even 70's (or want a little humorous taste of those that did) will surely enjoy this one. I have watched many of the 70's/80's type movies, and enjoyed most of them, but this one has always been my favorite. As some other reviewers have mentioned, there are always bullies in schools, and this picture takes that "fear" that many of us had, and exploits it for fun and enjoyment. When the main character mistakenly, and innocently touches Buddy Revel, he sets into motion his seemingly inevitable demise at school dismissal...3 O'clock. We can all feel his fear and desperation as he tries everything and anything to avoid the "showdown" at 3 O'clock High. Watching one plan after another fail miserably as the clock keeps ticking, is just a riot! I was recently talking about the movie with my brother, and discussing how we hadn't seen it in such a long time, and wondered if it were even available. Well, after a quick search, here I found it on Amazon, and how thrilled I was to once again enjoy this unheralded gem. IMO, the humor and story are like the old Honeymooners...timeless, and enjoyable by all! Definitely get it!

Movie Review: The Best High School Flick of the eighties!
Summary: 5 Stars

Ferris Bueller's Day off was a bit too much of a fantasy. Fast Times at Ridgemont High was too cliche' ridden. But Three O'Clock High hits it on the nose. This was high school as I remembered it. I felt a lot like Jerry on many, many days of my frosh, and sophmore years. Confused, dazed, and staring longingly at the senior girls that only wanted the jocks. The fight scene is classic, as is the library "domino" scene, and Richard Tyson can really show everyone what screen presence is all about. Big Bad Buddy wants to beat Jerry's behind, and he is finally angered into accepting the challenge, after trying everything in the book, including bribery top get out of it. The best scene in the movie, is easily the book report. Jerry tries in vain to ruin a book report, and get detention by acting like an obnoxious jerk, and reporting on a piece of classic erotica. But his nice looking young teacher is so turned on by the book report about an "Emmanuelle" type character, that she makes out with him in class, to the shock of all the students, most of all Jerry. Jerry must have forgot that women love obnoxious jerks, and erotica! He lands up in many strange situations like this, and in the end, learns that confrontation is nowhere near as bad as anticipation. Classic eighties film fare, what high school was all about for some of us, and hilarious throughout.

Movie Review: Forgotten Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

Here's an excellent 80s high school comedy that never reached the status of The Breakfast Club or Ferris Buehler's Day Off. It should have coz this is one good movie. The simple premise is done wonderfully and keeps you interested from start to finish. There are great performances all around, especially Richard Tyson as Buddy Revell. Sure, he looks like he's 30, but he is downright creepy and menacing. This film may be a comedy, but Tyson plays Revell viciously, as though Tyson thought he was in a drama. It suffers from the typical 80s view of high school which is unrealistic and overblown(I sure don't remember high school being like it is in these films), but this has a little more sense of reality than other films of the subgenre. But at the same time it takes on an almost fantasy quality(realistically, Jerry would have been able to escape this situation many times over, but that's not the point.) I honestly don't know anyone who doesn't like this film. It keeps you hooked so good that you're dying to find out what happens at three o'clock. And I don't know about you, but I get a chill every time Jerry walks up to Revell and demands his money back(then preceeds to call him an unpleasant name) and tells him the fight is on. Classic
