Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
Though I'd heard of this series of comedy DVD's before, I had not yet had the opportunity to see one, but as a sophisticated connoisseur of comedy (i.e. a guy who likes stuff that makes him laugh), I leapt at the chance to try one.
I haven't laughed this hard in a very long time!
I'm old enough to remember when comedians had to clean up their material before going on TV, and IMHO most of them benefitted from the experience...
because it made them work (think) a little harder.
Not that I believe blue humor can never be hilarious, but IMHO too many comedians use it simply as a brainless shortcut to laughs while only a rare few are masters of it. Besides, you can't watch it with the whole family.
So A plus for the concept, but how's the execution? Well, though it falls short of perfection,...
it doesn't fall too short IMHO!
John Tesh does a good job of emceeing, poking fun at himself and keeping his bits funny and SHORT, which is the key IMHO. In addition the six comedians, two returnees and four rookies, provide a good mix of comedy styles.
Up first is Rex Havens who has a hilarious bit poking fun at the peculiarity of car names if you stop to think about it, segueing into another good bit about the double standards applied to men and women in marriage.
Second is Chinese immigrant to Texas Joe Wong who arguably provides the most uncommon viewpoint. We've had lots of immigrant comedians commenting on the funny things about America from the newcomer's POV, but this is the first Chinese one I've seen. He also provides the one clunker of a joke. If he rewrote the punch line to "The reason our convenience store no longer gets robbed?" I'm sure he'd get a much bigger laugh.
Third is Dana Daniels with a hilarious parody of an incompetent magician complete with "trained" bird and deliberately disastrous audience participation.
Fourth is returnee Michael Jr., arguably both the most professional and the most overtly Christian, with a hilarious bit about "creepy Christians" or as he puts it, "the Oversaved."
Fifth is Isaac Witty with several bits about his social awkwardness. If the show had to be cut down to five, his is the act that I'd cut, not because it wasn't funny (it was), but because it was the least funny IMHO.
Last is returnee Taylor Mason who does several hilarious ventriloquist bits, displaying astonishing skill at it. He also works John Tesh into a funny piano bit at the end.
Unfortunately, I must now confess to being well and truly hooked! I will certainly select Thou Shalt Laugh 5, 6, 7, etc., if I ever get the chance (HINT! HINT!), but I'm probably going to have to shell out actual cash for Thou Shalt Laugh, Thou Shalt Laugh 2 - The Deuce, and Thou Shalt Laugh 3.
(sigh) Another incentive to find work and to find it quickly!
