Movie Reviews of Thoroughly Modern Millie

Movie Review: Very Disappointing
Summary: 1 Stars

I saw this movie more than once during its theatrical release in the 1960s, and enjoyed it very much. However, for some reason, when I bought the new DVD and saw it again, I found it to be so tedious and embarassingly corny that I turned it off after the first half-hour and donated the disk to my library. The acting is all annoyingly over-the-top, and James Fox, in particular, is so hyperactive I wanted to shoot him with a tranquilizer dart. Maybe it was the difference between viewing as a kid and as an adult, but this film has really lost its luster.

Movie Review: ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES OF ALL TIME
Summary: 5 Stars

I have loved this movie since I was a kid. Julie Andrews is wonderful, Carol Channing is wonderful... I love everything about this movie. It's so quirky and funny and musical all at once. I love it!!

Movie Review: JULIE ANDREWS IS THE BEST!
Summary: 5 Stars

IN THIS MOVIE JULIE ANDREWS ROCK. SHE IS THE STAR OF THIS MOVIE! ALL THE SONGS EVERYONE SINGS ARE JUST GREAT. I THINK THIS MOVIE IS SO APPELING BECAUSE ITS ABOUT A WOMAN(JULIE ANDREWS) WHO WANTS TO STAY MODERN. AND ON THE WAY SOME OF HER FRIENDS SUPRISE HER WILL A SHOCKING NEWS THAT MAKES THE MOVIE JUST MORE INTERESTING! I HOPE YOU TAKE MY ADDVISE AND BUY THIS MOVIE!

Movie Review: Not so thoroughly satisfying
Summary: 3 Stars

Still flush with the rapture of seeing "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music", my parent bundled us all up and took the entire family to see this, then new, Julie Andrews picture at a posh first run movie house in Washington D. C. The Uptown. I had not seen the film since then and had little memory of it except the creepy lady with the chopsticks in her hair, the dancing to make the elevator operate and the ominous squeaky wheel on the cart that comes to carry away the recently abducted and their possessions. Other than that I was a fairly uninterested ten year old and was ready to leave quickly. My parents didn't find the story nearly as suited to families as Julie's previous triumphs and, (remember this is 1967) happily agreed to let me wait outside the theater for them until the show ended. Ironically, I spent the last part of this "non family-oriented" show out in front of the Uptown theater with a fake cigarette I had brought with me, pretending to smoke using my own breath combined with the cold, November air as the smoke, and hoping to shock all those who pass by. Flash forward to a fairly uninterested 49 year old who was still ready to leave quickly. I tried, for a while, but soon found myself fidgeting like I did nearly 40 years ago and soon I was in the other room paying bills while the movie droned on and on. Oh, the cast was great. Julie was superb as always and Beatrice Lillie was wonderful as Mrs. Meeks. Mary Tyler Moore was cute but added little to the mix and Carol Channing just always makes my flesh crawl. Also, the big slapstick climax was embarrassingly terrible in both staging and timing, coming off worse than an old Three Stooges short, much worse because I love the Three Stooges. But, frankly, the problem with this film is that, even without the Overture and Intermission, it's just THOROUGHLY too long.

Movie Review: Nothing like the Broadway show!!!
Summary: 2 Stars

With the exception of a few songs and key lines I found this movie to be extemely disappointing in comparrison to the Broadway show. In my opinion, Julie Andrews lacked the spunk that Millie's character required and Carol Channing was just horrible as Muzzy! I do think Mary Tyler Moore was a very good "Miss Dorothy" and I was impressed by the dancing, much more so than the singing. If you are wanting to purchase this as a reminder of the Broadway musical, I would recommend purchasing the CD of the songs from the show instead.
