Movie Reviews of This is Tom Jones

Movie Review: Can't wait for Volume 2 of This is "Tom Jones"
Summary: 4 Stars

The Tom Jones Concert portion at the end of each show (the portion of the show I rate a solid 5 stars, Tom Jones is dynamite) is the best. His crazy moves on stage defy the laws of gravity. The 3 DVD set was an interesting time capsule of our culture during that era, ranging from Ace Trucking Company to Richard Pryor and Arethea Franklin to the Who...However, a gold mine of material was edited out. If future volumes are released they would be better received if they contained each complete episode and included TOM'S entire concert at the end of each show. I hope Time Life does not end the series with only 1 Volume, but continues to release volumes in the future show-casing one of the most dynamic performers of all time. If anyone has any knowledge about future releases or how to obtain DVD's from his 1969 television show or other concerts in the 60's and 70's from other sources, I would appreciate feedback.

Movie Review: It IS Unusual - Unusually Good!
Summary: 4 Stars

Truth be told, I ordered this set for my wife who is a life-long, panty throwing fan of Mr. Jones. She, of course, was all a quiver over the set and really enjoyed it. I was surprised, though, by how much I enjoyed seeing these gems from the 60's. We both remarked at how much we miss the variety show format, once a TV staple, and this is a good way to revisit those good times. Tom is in his prime and displays his full vocal talents (just check out his rendition of, "Danny Boy," at the close of show #1). The guest list is impressive as well and gives you the chance to see stars like The Who, Richard Prior, etc. in the early stages of their careers. If you pine for the 60's, are a TJ fan or just miss the variety show venue, you should enjoy this DVD set.

Movie Review: This IS Tom Jones
Summary: 4 Stars

Many people have mentioned that the shows are incomplete. This is true. What is not said, or maybe not known is that although Sir Tom owns the rights to the shows, he still must get clearance from EACH GUEST on his show (in the case that the guest is deceased (or not legally able to give it, their heirs) MUST give consent to use the part of the show they were involved with. If he is unable to get their consent then he cannot LEGALLY use the segment. I too was disappointed in not seeing some of the comedy skits and artists, but since I bought it for my wife, her opinion is what counts, and her opinion is she's only interested in TOM JONES. The other artists, although very enjoyable, are of only secondary concern. Her final word: "This is GREAT!!!!!"

Movie Review: Outstanding Even Though It's Not Complete
Summary: 4 Stars

If you like Tom Jones, and I have since he first sang "It's Not Unusual," then this is a must have. I'll take what I can get of any performances and shows from the '60s. This DVD brought back many good memories and reminded me of why Tom Jones was a superstar in the late '60s. I was thinking about reasons for the abridged versions of these episodes. It could be that some of the musical guests in the shortened episodes would not offer a release to show their performance. Maybe they are only showing what they legally have rights to. It's all about the money today and maybe some of them wanted an unreasonable amount to release their act on this DVD. Just a thought.

Movie Review: danced with such abandon
Summary: 4 Stars

Had lots of fun with this dvd. Tom's a little stiff when interacting with guests but he's a natural when performing. Forgot that he danced with such abandon and joy. Many great guests --good mix of woodstock era performers and the sometimes lame, traditional variety show guests that are still a fun curiosity and window back to those days...
