Movie Review: Historical jewel of the best Tom Jones had to offer...
Summary: 5 Stars

On April 25th, 2009, we went to see Tom Jones perform at the Miami Beach Jackie Gleason Theater, reliving memories of when we were young and used to see his show every week.

Tom Jones performed some of his best hits and the nostalgia was such that the idea occurred to us to acquire these DVDs so we could again enjoy what used to be one of our favorite entertainments on TV. Tom Jones not only had great appeal back then, but his behavior was such fun, for he was that star that wore tight pants, billowing shirts with wide collars that all young men used to copy. His sexual appeal was such that once, at one of his concerts, we had a blast watching all the young women go into a trance as they watched his hip gyrations.

Born on June 7th, 1940, Sir Thomas Jones Woodward is a Welsh singer that was super famous during the late 60s, with his own TV show. Since 1965, Tom Jones has sold over 100 million records and has kept his name in the limelight for most of his singing career.

The DVDs bring back a rather young Tom Jones, only in his late 20s back then and the likes of Lisa Minnelli, Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Little Richard, Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, Richard Pryor, Peter Sellers.

All the shows start with his signature song "It's Not Unusual" which became a massive hit in its day and you will be thrilled to see him in action as you listen to "Help yourself," "Kansas City," "Danny Boy," "I who have nothing," "What's new pussycat?" "The look of Love," "Green Grass of Home," "Those were the days," and so many others.

We have enjoyed every episode, shared these with friends and family and we sincerely recommend owning the DVDs, for they represent an eight separate episode collection of amazing talent. Don't miss it!

Movie Review: SImply the Best!!

I am ecstatic that these shows are coming out on DVD! Tom shows here that he is truly a master of his craft, the GREATEST Singer ever! I love to watch the passion and emotion he pours into every syllable! Nothing is left undone. His voice is magical, his face so expressive, those eyes, that smile! I love watching him rip out a great dance act as well! Another wonderuful aspect of this timeless performer is the way he interacts with his guest artists, never outdone, yet never trying to steal the limelight. He has a genuine joy about him and a goodness that comes across with all that vocal power. There has never been, never will be, anyone better! I hope the other DVD's come out soon as well. I live alone most of the time and whenver I am down or lonely I put in Tom's performance and feel alive again! I hope the next ones will include his renditions of Ghost Rider's in the Sky, Dock of the Bay, Never Walk Alone, ,It's a Man's , Man's 'Man's world and soooo much more I want to hear and see again! I also love being able to help my kids see this. All the excitement I had when I first saw these shows comes right back!

Movie Review: Great time capsule from the end of the swingin 60's!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is great fun....and features some brilliant vocals by Tom Jones...who like Elvis was a sex symbol who actually had some powerful pipes! The guest stars are a who's who of the era...well, like the Who, Joe Cocker, Aretha Franklin , Janis Joplin, Little Richard and Stevie Wonder...wow! The comic support by a young Richard Pryor, Pat Paulson, Peter Sellers are wonderful. The quality of the video is very good and Mr Jones spiced the production up with fun intros and a half hour interview from this year. All great stuff...and not lip synched! very edgy versions of some of these tunes and a bit raw and unpolished at times.

Oh..and to the "EXPERT" who reviewed this title months before it came out..
and complained about the 8 times Tom Jones sings "Its Not Unusual"? 6 of em are the same SERIES OPENING...another is a duet with Stevie Wonder ..with Stevie taking the lead and likewise with Aretha Franklin. Tom only performs it ONCE in this set during his "Concert" segment. Seems the "Expert" might benefit from viewing the DVDs he or she reviews.

Movie Review: Wow!!!

Mr. Tom Jones still has it. The voice, the stage presence, the sex appeal. It's amazing that his performances still get my heart pounding after more than thirty years.

The show itself is fun to watch. It has the typical variety show format. He has musical guests, comedy guests, and other assorted people dropping by. The dancers are fabulous and do not seem to get much mention. I also appreciated the huge orchestra who backs Mr. Jones.

The sets are cheesy and dated as well as are the costumes that they wear, that it's fun laughing at them, I'll admit. Also, they show the audience frequently. That's a riot to see the hair styles and the clothes that they wear! How much teasing and hairspray can hair take before it all falls out? I am still trying to figure out the answer to that question. :)

The show is worth watching more than once. I am hoping for a complete series release, some time soon.

Movie Review: A groovy good time!

A total time capsule of a good time. It's great to see the variety show format to appreciate the creativity and talent that went into producing these shows. The production numbers with Tom are a blast. The costume design, set decoration and choreography are nothing short of fantastic. Tom's singing is the main attraction and there's no doubting his vocal ability and possession of all the ingredients of a truly great performer. His band, complete with back up singers rocks the house down.
Never being a big fan of Janis I was surprised to be blown away by this duet! The camera work which cuts to different angles and shots of the musicians is electrifying. His duet with Little Richard is a blast. Stevie Wonder is, as usual superb... Aretha, what can I say. It's all been said... AMAZING. What a treat to see these artists at their peak. I can't wait for volume two. Tom, please bring it on ASAP!
