Movie Reviews of This Film Is Not Yet RatedMovie Review: A frightening look at the underbelly of the beast Summary: 4 Stars'This Film Is Not Yet Rated' is a documentary that both details the MPAA's secret rating process for films, describes the arbitrary way it has been applied with examples, and provides some investigative journalism into the ratings board. I had known for some time that directors had been recutting films in order to get an R-rating instead of an NC-17; while this was unsettling to consider, it seemed better than government-sponsored control over the process. After having seen this film, it's hard to imagine how it could be much worse.
And I think that Kirby Dick, the director, misses his chance to really point out the flaws in the system. While he does detail that the process is secret, arbitrary, and heavily influenced by the studios, he spends too much time detailing the double standard of sex vs. violence. I think this is the wrong attitude to take. The fact is that there is an acceptance of violence over sex in the U.S. For many people, it is much more acceptable to see someone get shot than to see a couple have sex. In this way, the ratings board reflects a prevailing opinion in America. Rather than getting hung up on trying to analyze this, the director should have focused on analyzing how an open ratings process would allow all films to be rated fairly and on a level playing field.
With that being said, even with the time wasted on discussing sex and violence, a very terrible picture of the MPAA's rating process is painted. I found the movie to be both informative and entertaining. With the political sway that these huge media corporations now hold, I would say that it is the duty of anyone who pays into the system to see what exactly is going on by watching this film. And I will go so far as to say that this is an important film.
